Winter bike 2.2" or 56 mm. Only way to be safe.
To be honest, winter in London is mild pretty rare to get now and / or ice in inner London.
-
• #3
23mm for slush and wet, thin knife through, fat ones get bogged down. you wont get real snow, but if you do you need fat knobbies (or spikes even), with front and rear guards,

I like Armadildos in winter because I don't like fixing punctures in the rain or when my pinkies are too cold to grip a tyre.
The Roubaix Elite is 23/25c and prob the biggest that fits between the stays on my CONdor.
Kinda heavy and dead feeling.
And criminally expensive, at about 26 notes a go.

We're not through with summer, don't start doom mongering yet.
You'll be asking where's best to get carpets for an igloo next.
-

Thanks for the tip Chris. I'll get down there tomorrow to beat the rush ;)

The holy grail for tough tubs
Unfortunately I can only get a 19mm on my bike. The IRO turned up today so wider boots are in my future.

yep.
I always have intentions to change to something else for the "winter" but before I know it, it's easter and summer is on it's way so I carry on using what I've got until they wear out.

These in 32mm on my winterbike (I live in Norway), they give a whole new meaning to the expression road buzz. Would'nt fit on the BJ though

Fashion TV was just saying, 'Its all about puncture resistance this winter season'.
Slip sliddy isn't the problem (london winter is no worse than wet roads any other time of year), its fixing punctures when is cold and wet thats the bugger for me. And there is so much extra puncture making crap on the roads in the winter.
-

In England I always found Autumn worse than winter, as the combination of leaves and rain somehow produce a teflon like road coating.
-
• #20
so do we reckon I should go for 28's or just 25's? or 25 front/28 rear?
will 28 be too slow? will 25 offer a significant enough grip advantage over my 23's?
tough questions.
-
• #21
I seen couriers with 28" Top Contact, if they can ride that everyday, I'm sure it'll be fine, thought I only ridden with 23.
-
• #22
can you get these with wellies too for heavy rain???
-
• #23
ok i ordered 28's. i figure 25's are too close to my 23's (which still have plenty of life left in them). all that ice and snow is scaring me.

Mr.fred, and what tyres did you roll with last night?
Winter is approaching, and 23mm tyres wont be the best for snow, muck, or worse, icy roads.
I've emboldened and underlined sizes up to 700x30, as these will be the ones that can be used for
converting many bikes with road/racer clearances, to winter pluggers/hacks. Normally 700x28 should fit EASILY.
EDIT: Clefty has fitted her new Schwalbe CX Pro 700x30 to the REAR of her narrow clearance bike.
The 700x30 proved too wide at the front. Check first before buying, if a 700x28 is best, or if you can squeeze in the 700x30.
Thanks Clefty!! ;)
