I think it's an awesome idea. I wonder how durable it is...?

  • I like that comment regarding its extra weight:
*"A friggin pound. Some weight penalty. Take it off your American gut. And 'how in the HELL is this any better/easier/more effcient/smarter than flipping a wheel around in the dropouts?'*
    Better? Cleaner and faster.
Easier? Leave it on the chain, in the dropouts, don’t flip your bike.
    More efficient? Same as above.
Smarter? See the all the above."

  • My SRAM groupset is the best thing I've ever ridden by a good way and I've ridden Record and Dura Ace so I'm a fan of anything they do.

    I bet it'll be good.

  • I reckon for offroad or touring it'd be handy. For a street bike, not so much.

  • Fuck me what an annoying website.

  • the extra weight is nothing when at the center of the wheel, those deep v rims and bargain bin tyres have far more effect on the rotating weight of your bike.

  • Fuck me what an annoying website.

yeah, don't you just hate websites like these? why do so many big companies/musicians have these flash-heavy websites? it does nothing to impress me, only pisses me off.

  • yeah, i like the comment that say we need a wireless one , with on the fly switching.

  • Too bad, but I think it might not suit very heavy "mashers" like me. I like the idea, but it does stipulate that it is not suggested for tandems or pedalcabs. I believe this would be due to load of weight, and amount of torque applied.

So for the super-spinny crowd, it might be manna from heaven. Shame. :(

  • and what are you basing that on? it might be fine!

  • It's spaced 130mm, so I don't think it's aimed at us.

  • Not easy to get an image from a flash page. :(

  • +1 about good for long distance rides.

Yep, that's what I thought. I'd be happy with a text page and the odd decent photograph of it closeup.

But noooooo... that's not good enough.

  • Fuck me what an annoying website.

fucking awful isn't it. made my brain hurt.

  • seeing as someone made a topic about this hubs, the weight of that hub is 480g, and by my estimation the average weight is 250g?

almost twice the weight, even a flip flop hubs is lighter, and granted the weight is in the middle of the wheel which have no effect while on the move, it's still a bit of a penatly for those who's really want to shave off as much weight as possible.

  • The only possible reason I can see for this is the ability to run disc brakes and still have a fixed/free setup, but it doesnt have disc mounts so thats out.

Maybe its for people who like their tyres to run in the same direction (ie. wet weather tyres) for both free and fixed?

Otherwise its just seems like an extra 200g needless weight gain; less flexibility with regards to freewheel and sprocket choice (surely sheldon advises a tooth or two extra on the freewheel); and uglier, in comparision with most flip/flop hubs.

But I still say more power to the tinkerers

  • Good find islipaway!

  • i think this is pretty lame, if you could switch while riding it might be useful, but whats the point if youve got to get off the bike to turn a screw. might as well just HTFU and carry on riding it fixed.

  • That axle is just waiting to snap:

If you'd just arrived at the top of Tourmalet in the TdF and were about to descend, I think it would be worth hopping off for 30 seconds to make the next 20km much, much, much easier...

I seen these TdF peeps. Nowadays they have dangly bits under the rear wheel, and flicky bits under the brake levers. I'm not sure the Torpedo, would catch on there... ;)

I'd still like to see one with a disc mount, so that it would have a point.
eg. a cyclocross commuter which you want to ride fixed on the road, and then hit the trails running SS with loverly disc brakes. You'd still be running the same ratio on and off road though. Which doesnt sound right. Maybe a White Industires double-double style set up would be a good idea?

It sounds like too much faff to me though.

Spinning 50 Gi to the trails FTW

I'm talking about ye olde hub above.

  • I'm talking about ye olde hub above.

Thought you might have been. Fancied a dig anyways.

Looking at ye olde hub. I suspect skid stopping was'nt a big thing back then.

  • Wouldnt that lumpy screw assembly on the ye old hub mess up the wheel balance somewhat? Especially as itd probably be made of steel.
