Bike down: Roehampton Gate, Sunday morning

Posted on
  • No one's fault but my own - I took a corner too fast on my way into Richmond Park, skidded in the rain, and went straight into a lamp post. I'm fine (cuts and bruises), but my beautiful beautiful Surly has a buckled frame, and will in all likelihood never be ridden again. I am grieving like never before. Bad break-ups have nothing on this. I still can't bring myself to inspect or photograph the damage. :-(

This is it in its former glory...

  • Oh, now I see what you mean.
    Bad luck, heal up.

Have you had your frame checked properly? My Steamroller frame took some pretty serious tumbles and beatings.

  • currently going through the same greaving process, taxi pulled out on me last week. Killed my Bob jackson, I'd waited 10 month for it to be delivered, then id only done 200 miles on it before it got wrecked. No matter how much someone say's 'it could have been worse' it doesn't help.
But hey, it could have been worse.

  • It's true, it could have been worse.

Imagine if if had been the other way round - bike is fine, you're buckled

Losing a bike sucks, but I'm glad you're all right

  • That's terrible news. Let us know when you eventually check the damage. Both mine and <ack's are somewhat dented but still ride like a dream.

i hope the cabbie is buying you a new one!

  • that sucks, you loved that surly! heal up soon love.

  • Emilia

Condolences on your loss. Hope the cuts and bruises heal quickly.

  • I loved my bike a little too much last night, buckling the frame in the process.

  • Sorry to hear this. Roehampton Gate is deceptively tricky as it involves tight right and left turns at speed. I've had issues with cars pulling out of the side turning without looking and another of being squeezed onto the pavement.

  • Eeeek...
    unlucky Emilia.
heal quick and start thinking about the new one... that'll be EVEN better !

  • EEeeek! My heart skipped a beat then.

Skipped the text, just saw a pic of you and RIP.

Even though ive never met you (and most the people here) that wouldve been way dark.

Thank yourself lucky, just a frame. Its a proud moment destroying a frame and coming away clean, a trophy of sorts.

  • Bad News Em. fingers crossed the insurance claim goes through and you can start again... even better...

  • glad you're ok hon'. Bikes are special, but in the end, replaceable. You aren't!

  • Emilia get well soon
sorry to hear about your crash
good going though hitting a lamppost
how did you manage that !
    the good news
is that now you get to plan your beautiful new bike...;)
    Like what colour
Whether it going to be English or Japanese or Italian
    What wheels & what group
whether it going to be a hipster or vintage
    or a modern urban commute
Rest up and get on velospace
    and start dreaming

  • That's bloody bad news. I was circulating in the park later that day. Managed to avoid the deer crossings and the 4x4 cowboys. I'd have hated to total the bike instead. Hope you are back on the road soon.

I know, I know, but I'm struggling to imagine how. I'd had the bike for 14 months - just enough time to do a few 1000 miles, have some adventures, and totally fall in love with it. I'd started to make all sorts of plans for the future - I'd just put a rack on it, and was going to promote it to being my long-distance inter-city bike (I've just picked up a boring bog-standard Condor, which will now become my rebound bike), and eventually ride across America on it. And then some. And it rode like a dream - I smiled every time I got on it, and used to glance at it sitting in the corner of my room, and feel all smug that it was mine.

I'd almost rather have broken a few bones. Bones heal - frames don't.

Well, the bike hit the lamp post. I hit the road and the kerb. Though there must have been a few other impacts I didn't notice at the time. I have bruises in the strangest places.

But you're right - onwards and upwards. (I'm thinking Mercian Professional, emerald green flamboyant, maybe a Surly chainring (for old times' sake), Phil Wood high flange hubs...)

  • sorry to hear bout the pink surly loss, emilia. grab shinscar's bike. looks like your surly's long lost twin ;p

but yeh, good to hear you didnt damage yourself too bad. i think that's the same corner where simonc had a big faceplant

  • Never met you Emilia but felt sick when I skipped the text and just saw your picture with RIP.....Thank goodness you will be alright and mend, good luck with the new project.

Ahem. Have edited. Sorry for any alarm caused!

  • erk. Glad you're ok and sorry about the bike. I'm sure the Tarmac in Richy Park is made out of something extra slippery... I've seen countless riders come off there when its wet. I crashed my beloved Pinarello on this years Etape, went down hard but thankfully the frame wasn't damage - Carbon 'aint as fragile as some people like to believe.

  • Awwwwwww. My sympathies, Emily... I know you adored that bike, in all its pink glory.

But on the bright side, as somebody mentioned earlier, at least you get the fun of planning your next bike...
