  • It's been a while since we had a thread about helmets.

Bike Snob NYC made reference to these beauties recently:

I shal not be buying one. You may wish to:

they have already been in numerous helmet threads already.

They are a basic piss pot skate helmet imitations with a hat stuck on top.

I would rather wear a skateboard helmet than those hats, and rather a 'real' bike helmet than those.

  • little late (early?) for april fools surely...

  • I think fugly is the word you're looking for...

  • most helmets look shit. fact.

  • True...these ones look extra shit though...

  • can anyone identify the brand/model of this helmet?

    is it rapha pricey?

  • catlike whisper, i believe

  • Catlike ^ yup, what he said

  • it is a catlike whisper.

The catlike whisper is awesome. I have one, loads of ventilation and yours for 132 at wiggle

  • thanks all

@ shoots - which helmet did you buy recently?

  • might be worth a look in condor - sure I saw a whisper for less than £130. also, i'd highly recommend not buying a helmet online. much better to get it fitted properly in a shop who know what they are doing.

  • prendas have one for £98 but not keen on blue and yellow.

  • Catlike Compakt Pro - like a Whisper - fewer holes - £55 cheaper

Cheaper still once the € rate gets a bit more sensible.

  • I've recently started wearing a helmet on the road, I regulary exceed 30mph. Even on a moped you are required by law to have a bsi approved helmet. Does such a standard exist for cycling helmets? Nothing is mentioned on the wiggle site about that catlike whisper helmet. I had a helmet once when i was a kid that split in half when i crashed at low speed into a tree, ever since I've always thought you were pissing in the wind a bit if you expected a bike helmet to protect you in a high speed inccident (especially one with so many holes).

  • I have a Catlike Whisper and although I am generally happy with it, there are a few bits I don't like.

The fit is more round than oblong. It is squared off at the back. I have an egg shaped head, so the fit isn't ideal. There is a slight pressure point on my forehead.

The main fault (and this is not just me) is that the adjustment clasps at the back are pretty flimsy. A small part in one broke during normal use. I ended up fixing it with a piece of plastic and epoxy. Should really have sent the helmet back. Mine is the 2009 edition. I am not sure if they have updated the design since.

The wise heads on here have some very good advice: Try a helmet before spending loads of money.

  • My Catlike adjustment clasp thing broke too - I called up the distributor and the sent me a replacement the next day for free. Speak to Adrian!

  • for £50-£130 i would not be expecting what holds it to your head to brake so easily..?

  • Quality wise the best road helmets I've used are MET and LAS.

My MET Stradivarius is brilliant and still in very good nic even after 5 years of use, the only down side was it had a few pressure points.
I recently got a new Giro Prolite which is way more comfy but nowhere near as well made.

  • I've got a giro saros. Comfortable, looks nice, tons of ventilation (too much almost- always end up with a cap on underneath) and not too dear at £70

  • I like the look of the Bern Macon

Anyone using one? What do you think of it build and quality wise?

For my commute I currently use a Met Aliseo which has served me well for a few years.

  • Specialized S Works for me, had a huge out whilst wearing it and knocked out cold, came to and after the hospital visit and a few days I examined it for damage and a slight hairline crack had appeared! It took a huge knock and no doubt saved me from potential wheelchair and liquidized food.

Had it replaced by Specialized on the rash repair programme which is excellent, return the old one and only pay half for the new one

looks like you're head would get really hot in that.
