DIY power grips?

Was wondering if anyones had a go at making there own powergrip style pedal straps?

Think they look overpriced for what they are and will rather buy a few bits from a poundshop to make my own. (even if they fall apart)

Was mainly thinking how necessary the little metal bracket at the back is? Would it cause problems if I attached the strap directly to the pedal?

i think the bracket is at the front. i doubt it would be particularly hard to make, i think i've seen diy ones on a japanese site.

I just made some for object to work with his new flat pedals...hence no metal plates cos they mount to the ends of his pedals rather than the front and back.
Just make sure your straps are rigid enough...if they're too soft they'll get squashed flat and stay flat.

yeah, think they look great too and would be interested to know how well they work.

From how powergrips are described they make it sound like the way they tighten when your twist your foot into position is the most important thing.

Yours look very sturdy, but dont look like they have much 'twist action' do they still work good?

ive been wanting to try these for a while. ive been using clips and straps for years but im never satisfied with the tightness, either theyre too loose or so tight i cant get in or out of them easily.

does the bracket aid in the tightening action, or do they work just as well without like scotts?

Scott your version seems to run on the other diagonal to power straps. Any reason for this.

They're the same way around. The powergrip in the top picture is the left hand peddle.

If they ran the opposite way you'd need to inset your foot from the frame side of the pedal and all those pesky chains, chainrings and metal tubes get in the way.

I thought they would be mirror image of each other. Do you rate them better than clips and double straps? Been thinking about them for polo / mbt bike.

The tightening action is determined by how far you slide your foot in before you twist it straight...because the strap is diagonal you should slide your foot in at a slight angle before straightening.

Tommy, that's exactly what I wanted them for. I'm really not a fan of clips and straps and pretty much aslways use clipless but for polo I've been using straps (nylon straps, toeclips on MKS RX-5s) and just never got on with them.

Scott's strap-on's are perfect for my needs. The odyssey twisted pedal is a weird shape compared to most DX-style pedals and curves from the outer corner rather than just the rear. The makes the staps ideal to slide your foot into.

They're really stiff and becuase of the multiple layers they bounce back up if you do stamp on them.

Grab me at drinks sometime and have a go if you like.

What's going on in the top right hand side of the second picture, it looks like your front wheel but my hungover brain won't tell me what I am looking at, it's upsetting me :(

I tried putting the fold in similar to the real deal and the japanese how-to but it didn't work too well at keeping it in an arch. I even affixed zipties around the inside to try and act as a spring, but that didn't work too well either. Scotts multiple layers look good and stiff. Report back in a few weeks emilie when you've missengaged a few times and let us know if they still keep the arch or lay flat on the pedal rendering then useless.
