Help with two-pronged Campy crank washer-thing

Posted on
  • Forgive the really shitty phone-pic, but can someone please tell me what tool I need to remove the outer washer-thing on these cranks? It's got two, very tiny holes on opposite sides of each other.

They're not something I've personally ever seen/used before, but regardless are stopping me from just unbolting the crank-bolt with a standard allen…

Jimmying it with some steel cocktail sticks just now didn't work, and I didn't want to force the issue. Any ideas?

    Oh, and thank you!
    :)

  • is this mystery washer thing inside the crankbolt hold in the crankarm, or are you referring to the bottom bracket cup?

If its just a cranks dust cap, just yank it out with anything, if its metal you may want to screw it out though.

If its a bottom bracket cup, you need a 2 pin BB tool.

  • Oops. This might help:

So it's flush with the crankbolt, within the recess in the actual crank… But it appears to want to rotate clockwise (i.e. in the opposite direction to the crankbolt) to loosen.

  • aren't they just self extractor crank bolts?!?

  • aren't they just self extractor crank bolts?!?

Yes. You can get a special tool to remove them but a screwdriver or pair of narrow nosed pliers will do the job equally as well.

To remove it you need to turn the outside bolt anti-clockwise until it pops out, then remove the bolt as per usual.

  • .

  • … or is it the "one-key" system that I read about on the Park site, that shouldn't (or can't, not sure) be removed? I'm confused. By a friggin' bolt. :(

  • To remove it you need to turn the outside bolt anti-clockwise until it pops out, then remove the bolt as per usual.

But the outer bolt wants to turn in the opposite direction to the inner crank bolt. So surely it should unscrew clockwise? Except that both sounds shift about a 1/4 turn before sticking. And then the actual crank bolt, now loosened, turn till it meets the outer bolt and then I'm back to where I'm started… :(

Will pick up some needle nose pliers from town when I'm at work today and give it a try though. Thanks all.

    Any more advice?

  • You need one of these;

    Sweet, thanks! definitely red?

  • Remove the outer cap completely before you loosen the crank bolt. It might stick a bit but brute force will triumph in the end. I've got these on my Stronglight cranks and once you know what you're doing it's a walk in the park.

  • Gotcha. Thank all. Will let you know if (and most likely when) this works tonight.
    Have a great day.

  • Have a look at this.

    Suspect you need to HTFU!

Unless the inner bolt is damaged, its pushing against the outer cap that pulls the crank arm off.

Logic would dictate the outer cap would undo clockwise, but the threads on the crank arm are designed for dustcaps or extractor tools that tighten in the normal manner.

  • self extracting crank bolts, you just use the allen key in the middle and as u undo the bolt, the specail adaptor pushes against the face popping the cranks off ie no need for crank puller.

  • Right, so no pin spanner malarky. Just a dose of HTFU and a bit of welly then.
Hmmm. Conflicting advice, but Dale & Kowalski are usually right on these things.
If in doubt, hit it harder, eh?

  • the pressure you are experiencing, i think, is the self extractor try to push the crank of. shouldn't need too much force though.

  • Indeed, welly did the job: self-extractor it was.
Muchos gracias to all and sundry.

    If in doubt, HTFU.

I should totally get that tattooed…

  • Glad you got it sorted addie. Lame-ish advice from me. Fail.
