personally, cheap stems scare me. i'd be concerned about threads stripping, weld failure and getting dropped on my face when it snaps. depends how you ride maybe as to how much stress you put it through.

I worked in a bike shop/community bike recycling kinda place for while.
Got through tons and tons of bikes, and I can say ive never ever seen one of them basic kalloy or SR road stems snap.
I seriously would not worry about thread stripping, if you got the stem that tight your bars would crush & the bolt head would round. They will not strip.
I also expect that your talking about a forged alumium stem? so no welds.
Kalloy probably makes the most seat posts & stems in the world. I would trust them over thompson. They have consistency, you can know exactly what your getting.
Go buy the them, £5.99 brand new sounds alright, they are very ordinary though, perhaps ask a few friends if they have a spare first.

fair enough advice. i was thinking about ahead welded ones more than quill. i had the threads strip on old forged stems and weld fail too but mountain bike ones take more stress than road ones. 6 quid is cheap as, you pays your money and takes your choice and all that.

kalloy make stems/seatposts for almost all the other stem/seatpost manufacturer's including race face and USE . they are one of the best casting firms in the business. they're cheap because they make millions of them a day.
i've found a black kalloy 1" 100mm stem for sale for £5.99. are they any good?
