Advice Please!

  • I have a Maillard Hub and a Campy BB as shown.

I want to run a fixed sprocket on the hub but am not sure if I can e.g. can't use a lock ring? Will I have to use a freewheel?

I also need a chainset, ideally a track set-up, but I'm not sure what will fit on this BB.

Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can finish off my bike before the summer is over!

    Cheers.

  • I think i have the same hub, i threaded a fixed sprocket on there and im gonna see if i can weld it on

  • I've discovered that seems the only way to run it as a fixie! Let me know how you get on with the welding...

  • lochtite??
only for the fact that if you weld your lockring on you wont be able to change sprockets when you wear yours out? just a thought.

  • my wheel is a pile of shit anyway so when anything wears out ill just replace it.

anyway, does loctite even hold the sprocket in place? i just rode mine with nothing on and the slightest backpedal unscrews it, i cant see superglue doing much!

The crucial thing that hold the sprocket on is the tightness. You can get a good amount by rotafixing it, (holding your cranks in place & rotating your wheel backwards with all the might of your arms).

This even without a lockring, can suffice for riding with brakes. The loctite will help, and no its not superglue.

If your planning to do any backwards pedalling then you really do need a lockring, thats why ones without are referred to as "suicide hubs"

  • its not superglue?! maybe im thinking of something else.

  • The hub is aluminium, cant be welded, but the guy managed to erm.... 'smoosh' the metal of the hub around the sprocket so it cant come off, the sprocket remains unharmed too, ive not ridden it yet as i need pedals but ive tried to get the sprocket off with a chain whip and couldnt, i think it will hold till i can afford a new wheel at least.

can i be the benefactor of your life insurance please?
