Springs in SPDs

Posted on
  • Anyone know how to reassemble the springs in a Shimano SPD? I think the model is 858. It fell apart in use. I have all the bits, and know what goes where, but the difficult bit is getting the springs back in tension.

The effect of the fall-apart was the same as I would have achieved if I had backed off the tension adjuster bolt until it fell out, and then replaced it (but I was not so stupid as to do that).

There must be a technique, or tool, for this or the things would never be assembled in the first place.

    Clues, anyone?

  • not sure if you can re-assemble, i think the springs are pretty well tensioned before they are assembled.
    could be wrong

  • You will need to fabricate some tools and the use of a vice, probably not worth the bother.

  • You can drop them round to me if you like, I have dis-assembled and re-assembled M520's successfully. do you have a picture of what one they are?

  • You have to line all the parts up, lightly grease everything, then chuck it all in the bin and buy some ATACs.

  • hehe.

  • Tell you what.. you buy the ATACs bmmf and I'll test ride them to see if they really are better.
Then it will be case closed. :)
