Advice wanted on SPD pedals

  • as title says after a new set of spd pedals, want them to be fairly light weight but not stupidly expensive, what do people think i should spend my money on?

i have been advised to get some egg beaters what experiences have people had with these.

  • I'll save you doing a basic search of the forum.

Buy Time ATAC and never go back. The alium's are a good deal, and so are the basic XE.

Best performing and most reliable double-sided clipless pedal (without spending a fortune) bar none.

  • My vote is for Time Attack, of what ever level you feel like. Have been using them for a few months now and as far as I'm concerned they are so much better than Shimano SPD, and I think heaps of people here would agree. They just seem to work, easy to get into and out off, and seem to have enough float to keep the knees happy. Haven't tried egg beaters though, they just look a little fragile and I've seen lots of photos of them cracked up, but that was from mountain biking days.

  • does anyone know the difference between the atac xs and the roc? Was thinking of spending that sort of price (£60) but was wondering if its worth it

  • +1 for time atac.
been using mine for about 4 months or so and absolutely love em!

I like the cheaper ones because the springs are steel, and the tension adjustment is pretty redundant. I doubt the bushing/bearing quality is much/any better in the mid-range models...?

  • I've been clipping out all day. Don't go SPD. Especially if you're brakeless.

  • where can I get the atacs most cheaply in central london?

is there a significant difference between the xs and the aliums? or is cheap and cheerful best?

There are some going for £25 inc. P+P on ebay.

Kind of annoying considering I just bought some for £30 from the same guy!

EDIT: Just noticed they don't come with cleats - that's why they're cheaper

  • And if you must have them now (rather than wait for postage) action bikes do the alium for about £35 with cleats.

    Another time atac fan

you must have the multi-release cleats, i had the same trouble until i changed, not one accidental un-clip for over 10 months

  • I once had an accidental un-clip using Shimano SPD's, so I just tightened them up...didn't have one after that...seems like a simple solution to the problem of potential un-clips, or am I missing something?

  • Feet often move slightly when skidding, and when you pull up hard on a skid, it seems the slight movement is enough to pop you out. Tightening doesn't help.

But - I shall try the one way cleats. Pretty commonly carried everywhere murt?

  • ma thinks so, just ask for them in any of the LBS's

by multi release, do you mean double sided pedals??

  • no the multi release will release when you role and / or twist your foot but single release will only release when you twist your foot.

  • cool dude, that makes sense!

  • there are two threads running simultaneously on this topic; this one and one in General.
