Actually, one more question - is that link I've posted the best thing to print off and hand over to admin? I can't read it without the acronyms making me glaze over...

Bearer of bad news here - as an employee (I assume you are) technically I don't think you can claim for your daily commute to and from your place of work, only for any miles travelled once you are at work e.g. from one meeting to another, or between offices.
Here's a thought though - can messengers claim 20p per mile against tax on all their dockets?

Ask object, he knows all about this

No, it's not for work - I'm doing a radio production course, and for some reason our travel expenses get refunded. And we get free biscuits, which effectively means my travel expenses get refunded twice!

HMRC is a good starting point. I'd also suggest a google map or bikely print out of your intended commute to prove distance. Remember, as a cyclist, it's not unreasonable to travel via a lower risk route provided that it is still relatively direct (i.e no dual carriageways without cycle lanes, no major E&C style junctions etc).

Ah, good idea. I'm also going to give them a print-out of my bikejournal.com records (we'll probably be backdating a couple of months) and am thanking my lucky stars that I've been geeky enough to keep filling it in! Tch.

I claim 20p/mile on my commute to and from work because I'm a contractor and the place of work is only "temporary", it also means I can claim breakfast and lunch too.
I've just been told I might be able to claim back 'travel expenses' for my commute. (Hurrah!) Does anyone know what the going rate is, per mile? So far the closest I've got is this:
