  • Probably one of the better British sports to sponsor. Looks like they are on the ball.

  • Now that is a good bit of business for both sides.

  • British Cycling today announced its plans for Team Sky, a professional road cycling team, in a multi-million pound four year deal. The team hopes to contest the Tour Down Under when it commences racing in 2010, with the hope of earning a wildcard entry to the Tour de France. One of the new squad's aims is to produce the first British Tour de France winner within the next five years.

  • I got my team strip last week. I'm feeling strong and fast. See at training Hippy.

  • They tried to get me to leave Team Freeview, but a pair of shorts with "Dave +1" across the arse kept me with the terrestrial broadcaster.

  • It's an interesting/odd move.

If you read "Heroes, Villains and Velodromes" a strong case is made for not going road racing.

Perhaps British Cycling is now convinced that the time is right for a clean rider to win the Tour.

  • I'm going to call Sky today and remove Sky Sports. It's full of shitball.
If they'd sorted a team earlier maybe I'd have got some cycling coverage on Sky Sports?

  • MY predictatron was working during the Olympics then... thanks Uncle Rupert!

  • But it does mean the Sun has to be nice about cylists.

  • Probably the best time to cancel it. The next cycling on Sky will probably be the Tour of Langkawi highlights next year.

Echoing the news at the time isn't called "prediction". :P

  • all i see happening is the track team get weakened, zero golds at london 2012, and lance keeps on winning the tdf

not a good move at all

  • Sky pro-cycling team signs up for Tour de France
by James Quilter, Brand Republic 26-Feb-09, 08:50

LONDON - BSkyB has partnered with British Cycling to launch a road cycling team with the aim of achieving the first ever British win in the Tour de France, and will be looking to sign two consumer brand sponsors.

The team, which is being launched from scratch, will be branded Team Sky. The move to launch a professional road racing team follows on from its sponsorship of British Cycling's track team.

It will be headed up by British Cycling's director of performance Dave Brailsford who was behind the success of the UK cycling team at the Olympics.

The team's first appearance will be in Australia's Tour Down Under in January next year.

Sky director of commercial group Stephen Nuttall said Team Sky is currently looking to sign up two consumer brands to sponsor the team. It is also yet to sign up kit and bike suppliers.

Nuttall said the popularity of growing popularity of cycling as an activity was largely behind its decision to sponsor the team.

Beyond elite level racing, Sky is also looking to get involved at grass roots level with a series of events around the country. Last year it sponsored the London Freewheel event that allowed cycling unfettered access to the city's roads.

The decision to chase success on the road, and principally the Tour de France, presents an altogether more difficult challenge to the track cycling, so successful in the Olympics.

In the opinion of many observers Britain has never replaced its, arguably, most successful rider Tom Simpson, 1965 world champion and first English speaker to wear the Tour de France yellow jersey.

  • this is good news. I look forward to seeing them in action.

  • I think you should tell hippy about this...

Eh? All the male endurance riders who won gold at the Olympics were road professionals. The two disciplines mix nicely.

Armstrong won't win another Tour either.
