Miche BB Advice

Hello all,

I've searched the forum, but can't seem to see what I need.

So, I bought my Miche/Campag BB tool, and started winding in my BB tonight.
I don't have a spanner big enough so did it by hand, and then with another tool which was pretty ineffective. So, I got so far, and it stuck pretty solid. I'm getting a new set of spanners tomorrow, so will be able to apply some proper force, but I don't want to go break anything. Will I be ok to just push through this resistance?

The drive side doesn't go in as far as the non-drive side... See.

When I pull the cups out, I notice a little bit of 'silver' thread where there used to be black...

When I look inside, I see a little bit of something that doesn't match the rest...

So, any thoughts? Buy a big spanner and push the bugger in?

Get the BB tapped.

It's a right state.

Grease threads or teflon pipe tape. Dry metal on dry metal always going to be problematic. Plus you've got paint/powdercoat in them threads.

adoubletap - ok greasing them is fine and aye, some paint but some bits of rust I think.

Ok, I think I have the problem. I just measured inside the BB shell, and the thread runs for about 11mm. The Miche cups, run for about 16mm = 5mm on the outside. Are they supposed to go all the way in or are they supposed to have some hanging out? I can't see it being that much.

Its a British threaded 68mm BB shell. I was recommended this BB, but maybe its not for me :/

the thread goes further than you think inside the entry points for the seatpost and downtube, it just doesn't look like it does.

get it tapped, in cavendish - alex will do it for you, or any of them lovely chaps, for very little. BLB will do it for you for a bit more, but will do a perfectly good job.

tell the lbs that you want the thread cut further in the shell
and buy some grease!

oh - and also, doing it without a spanner is no good.

proper big adjustable, bish bash bosh, in it goes. i fitted two BBs this morning, and they were stiff, and there was resistance, but a bit of force, elbow grease, and in it goes. just make sure you're not threading it.

best purchase i made was a gert big adjustable. you can get them from any old tool shop.

the problem is not the BB threads, it's the shell, chased is the answer.

+1 plenty of leverage gurt lush mate. Put mine in on monday with a BB tool i borrowed from SBB and its got plenty o leverage.

Chase the threads, but don't face the shell.

The Mickey BB sits inside so there's no need to face.

OK, well BLBs it is. Would like to try Cavendish, but its miles away from home...

What is a face, and what is a chace? :) I do need the therad to go another 5-6mm into the shell on each side from what I can see as i don't have enough to get the cups screwed right in... Can a 'chase' do that?

really, i think the BB will go in, it just doesn't look like it will. however, get the BB chased out. they get this big tool and screw through the thing. takes a few minutes.

Chasing the thread is just re-tapping it so it's clear of debris.

Facing the shell is skimming the outside edges to make them parallel. Obviously this will remove the paint.

The MIckey BB fits internally, so the shell does not need facing.

yeah, but, when you start doing BBs or headsets it's easy to get the fear, you know 'oh shit i'm going to break the frame, i'm a klutz'. that's what happens to me .
