  • What are the advantages or disadvantages of a threaded or threadless headset? Particularly regarding durability and longevity.

I notice amongst the fixed crowd, its a matter of course that threaded headsets are used, as the older frames that some use make it an obligation. But, given the choice, what would you prefer to use and why?

  • 1" on a road bike, i prefer threadless as it allows lighter and stiffer stems.

1 and1/8th on mtbs again threadless

  • threadless all the way. less to go wrong.

  • for my is like chosing between CD and Vinyl, what is best?

difficult to say, probably in different escenarios different anwser

  • You can't beat a threaded headset/quill stem combo IMO, an elegant solution... I roll with both, they both do the job...

    well said,

Quill has a simpler cleaner look IMO

  • Threadless.
    Far quicker to adjust.
    Stiffer and lighter.
You don't need to strip your tape as with many of the non-faceplated quill stems.
As time goes by, there will be less and less in the way of quill jobbies.

  • depends on the period and style of the frame, surely? one of the main things that puts me off condors is the threadless headset / steerer / carbon fork.

same as. quill headsets will always be around, they are well over 40/50/60 years old(delete where appropiate) already, longer than most people will have bikes and live.
there will be a bigger market then for classic style frames.
i personally don't like aheads. so there. :)

  • They might have been around that long but try getting specific lengths in colours other than brushed aluminium or something. Ahead don't get that stupid wedge stuck in your head tube either nor do they require a big fucking wrench to adjust the headset. Try getting a minitool with a headset spanner on it. :P

In short, die quill stem scum, DIE!

  • powder coat, if you fit your headset proper like, no need to adjust.

  • Also, flipping. 1 stem - 2 positions, something else you can't do with quill.

    Quill Stems

  • Threadless ftw. I got an old peugeot road bike when i was younger. I was in the drops, hammering up north end green (a big hill!), and the threaded stem sheared off on me, sending me in to some bushes.

and that concludes todays lesson on threaded stems.

  • the stems ain't a problem (apart from being bendy, and the thing with the bar tape removal/clamp size problem)

but threaded headsets are well fucking bent, silly fucking big spanners

  • Yeah! Come on! Down with quills!

  • And they're fucking pink! Arrrghh proves they're are the devil's work!!!!

  • nitto aren't a proper cycling component brand

mickey mouse stuff, for clown bikes.

    tee hee

  • it was silver before I had sex with it

  • As time goes by, there will be less and less in the way of quill jobbies.

That's what they said when the fountain pen was invented. And look at us now.

  • threaded has it's place it's just threadless is soooooooo much better.
easier to produce and cheaper because of it. alot easier to seal. alot easier to setup. also brings down the price of forks. and means if you change your bike your more likely to be able to fit your existing forks to the frame (spacers are great).

  • Also, flipping. 1 stem - 2 positions, something else you can't do with quill.

    Quill Stems

    wrong

  • but then you're into adaptor territory..a heavy but simple way to use Ahead with threaded forks.

WTF? nitto so need a slap.

  • what a trully hideous stem.
