Can anyone tell me more about these tyres?

  • Got hold of these ratty old tyres from my "mystery source" failry cheaply. I was just after some amber wall tyres and as these were micelin thought they must be decent.

But they look really odd, almost like tubs. The tread doesnt make much sense either. A thin black layer of rubber almost painted on, with no rubber on the sides.Lots of half-moon paddle type nobbles. Cant see what these would be good for,

thought cyclocross momentarily. But could you really do that on 23c tyres? Also the smooth non-knobbly one is only 20c (the muddy one at the top)

Reckon I should keep these to run as street tyres, or would they be worth more to somebody else?

  • okay I may be wrong but from what i think, old tyres - old technology - bad idea.

  • I can read the label from here.
It clearly says 'Michelin HI-LITE ROAD'. Never ridden them but I know they don't look like tubs
Don't know about the one below it, definitely a Michelin clincher though

    Go on just ride them

I could tell they are clinchers as they never had built in tube and they do sort of have a bead.

They are well odd though, feel spongy.

No, they look just like clinchers

  • Michelin HI-LITE ROAD - Google Search

Skid shit out of them, then bin.

  • Folding tyres don't have the rigid bead you are accustomed to, they go on the rim funny but with air come good.

  • Michelin Hi Lites were their top of the range tyre in the early 1990s, if memory serves.

How else would you expect them to be, you can't have rubber on the side and gum wall?!?
