• am getting a custom bike built and trying to figure out exactly what i want.. its gonna be an ss touring bike with S&S but the ability to go offroad
its going to be disc brakes but the question is if i kit it with velocitys can i run normal tyres on the road and put 29er tyres when i want to take it off road? so basically are velocity wide enough for the tyres bead to sit in

and if so which tyres?

thanks!

tom

• the tyres might pop off a narrow rim, you could do it the other way round

get some 29er rims and put 700 x 25C tyres for road use, has been done on this bike

• spot on... thats what i was after. thanks!

am creating a scrap book of all the things i want/need

thats rims sorted. check.

• The other option is to get some rims that in between. I've got DT Swiss TK7.1 which are touring rims and they are quite happy with a 2.2" 29er tyre on there. I'd get more tyre volume with a wider rim but it all works fine and they work with skinnies too. BTW, I wouldn't get Velocities for a bike that will see serious abuse as I think you ccan get much better quality rims for similar money.

I would also get your bike spaced at 132.5mm at the end so you can use mountain or road hubs and I'd get a derailleur hanger (but no braze ons if you want a clea look) so you can go geared if you want at some point.

• nah.. gears are evil,

if i get wet or hurt my knees in the future i can always get a rohloff or an alfine

will look into those rims though. i am loving this process! am going to do some drawings next week

• what road bike could accomodate 2.2" tyres?

I barely have clearance for that on my mtb.

• its a custom bike... in the process of designing it, and it wont be specifically road, more touring.

I take it you wont be running 2.0+ tyres then?
Probably sensible.

I find riding over grass etc easier on my skinny tyred fixie than mtb. Sharp power delivery, and "rollage" (wheel diameter) is most important. I used wonder how all those cyclocross dudes rode such extreme off road on what at the time looked to me like unbelivaby skinny tyres. But since having my current bike. I really do get it. Shant think youd ever need anything more than a 35c for anything other than serious boulder hopping DH.

• flickwg, they're 28cs on Mack's bike, you can't get anything beneath 28cs on those rims.

• he said 25Cs might be possible to me

• yeah, no more than 20 i would say, need to find a good balance... i am not a wealthy man so wil be saving up/collecting pieces for a while, ezra isnt starting the build till october and i don't expect delivery till christmas (with a trip to new york chucked in)

what the best way to get it back and not pay vat btw?

• If you travel out there with a beater, dump that there and take back the new beast your ticket will show you travelled with a bike so you must return with a bike, presto.

I have a 29er mtb - the 2.2" tyres add a nice bit of cushion when you're riding rigid.

• 25s would fit on my rims but would look a bit weird.

• nice one bernhard, can collect all the nice shiney bits and take a crap frame with me, just swap frames when i get there! genius.

its gonna be something like this but bigger/ different disc mount mechanism, some more curveyness and maybe a wooden rack on the back

• you want something with clearance ;)

• yup. i might run nobby 2inch tyres and balloon slicks for when its road only, if its going to be a tourer (want to do italy) then some tyres with a lot of air will smooth out the ride and be better when i have panniers on

I'm just waiting for my Surly Cross-check to turn up in the post. I'd love to go custom like you, but just can't justify the cost. The Surly can run 45cc with room for fenders, and seems to tick all the boxes for me, but that thing your getting made looks pure sex compared to the utilitarian ugly surly.

What rims are they? I thought they were just Velocity deep Vs

edit: I'm retard I just read the velospace thing.

• balloon slicks are cool.

• Is touring the new fixed? All rounder frames seem to be gaining popularity amongst the young, or am i just unaware of how old i'm getting?

Momentum suggested i look at the Singular Peregrin and while it's a handsome bike, it's quite a way out of my price range. I don't think the Crosscheck is ugly, a little weird size wise but never-mind. One's almost in the post for me too.

I'm planning to do some bicycle traveling towards the end of the year, it's all about the escape for me.

I'm with the masses regarding the Velocity rims. Get something strong like a Salsa Delgado 29er?

Chris

• I've got a pair of Ma3k's rims on the way for my Surly. They're strong as hell and not as weighty as I expected.

We're just ahead of the next trend! Or are becoming old...

The Crosscheck is awesome - really nice ride and extremely versatile. I expect that the Singular peregrine will be about £350 or so and if it came out now I'd buy it instead if it came in my freakish size. Bigger clearance, disc ready, still with all the braze ons that you need for anything (front and rear rack, three water bottles, gears) and an EBB if you want to go SS. Plus it's lugged and looks seriously nice.

• i 'ride' for team singular!

they are sweet, i know a guy with one for sale at the moment too,

sam at singular was going to build me a ti version but i have decided to go to the US for for a fastboy cycles as i want the S&S couplings and bendy tubes...

singulars ride beautifully though, i rode a swift round mayhem last month

• MOmentum - why did you have to post that picture of the perfect multi-use-bike!?
59cm top-tube may be enough.. I'll wait till Winter. ;-)
