Road SPD on fixed

  • There seem to be many of you riding around using SPD and ATAC, as well as straps.
I ride with none for now, but I really need some sort of "connection"
Point is, everybody using SPD's here seem to use the MTB type with small cleats.
Since I have a geared road bike with road SPD's (large cleats) I would like to obviously use the same shoes for riding fixed.
Question is, are there any special drawbacks for road SPD pedal type as oppose to the small cleat MTB type?
Or can I just use the road pedal on fixed with no problems?

  • No other reason than road cleats are a bugger to walk with. Most people ride their bikes around town, to the pub etc so walking is important.

+1. though when taking the fixed for proper rides i often change the pedals to spd-sl.

  • Nice and clear explanation.
I thought they may be weaker or something.
I change the shoes anyway after ride so that's not a problem.

  • SPD-SL rocks.. until you have to walk anywhere. I use SPD around town so I can walk off the bike.
It's only for commuting so no biggie.

  • Flipping the pedal over and walking on road cleat.

  • Road pedals are a twat to clip into when trying to pull away from traffic lights ect (this only applies if you haven't mastered track standing like me) MBT pedals just seam to be easier to use for me. I wear sidi dominator's which have the bolt holes for both types of cleat... lucky me!

  • road pedals are great when you get used to them, much better than the small SPD cleats. I have look keo pedals on my road bike and SPDs on my commuter fixed because i like to be able to walk from the bike rail to my office/pub/tesco.

  • I use my Time Impact road pedals on my fixed and they're absolutely fine. No issue clipping in. I can recommend time cleats for walking in - you make a bit of a clip-clop sound but you don't slip around!

  • Time cleats?
Is this a brand or a different type?
    Found this:

I guess they require special pedals then?

  • Time cleats for Time pedals! Different brand, different "type", same concept. Every pedal manufacturer has their own system.

  • I rode road shoes for a few weeks while waiting to be able to afford to replace my mtb ones. The main difference I felt (bear in mind i was using spd pedals...) was that i found it quite hard to clip in because of the smooth rigid sole kept sliding all over the pedal, which was pretty dodgy when trying to move off at junctions. I kept fucking up and slipping off the pedals, jamming my balls on the top tube. On the plus side i did find it much easier to trackstand with the rigid soles, so just stopped unclipping at lights. ANd stopping at lights for that matter. I was ready to explain to any cops that i only jumped the lights out of fear for my as yet unconcieved children, but i never got the chance...
I have new mtb shoes now. It's all good.
