Wheel build cockup?

Posted on
  • I've just built up some wheels for a friend - thought all was ok, but she mentioned that the back looked funny.....I've just had a look and sure enuff, i've screwed up the lacing. I'm all set to rebuild it (need the practice, obviously!) but just wanted to ask if anyone could tell from the crappy phone pics if its safe or just about to fall apart!!

  • It won't fall apart, it may go out of true quicker though due to uneven spoke tension. It almost looks like a two leading two trailing type affair in bits.

  • cheers - reckon i can let her ride home on it then! she live in greenwich so if you see her on your travels in tears with a collapsed back wheel, you'll know who's fault it is!!!

  • there's a bloody massive metal ring stuck to the hub, could be a bit iffy.
and that sticker on the rim could kill her credibility..

  • credibility??? its a hybrid ffs!

  • hybrid is the new OTP. the sunday times is doing a piece on hybrid culture next week.

  • no way! OTP will never die

  • that dropout is loveley.

  • lovely and craked n failed

  • whats wrong? 2x, but do the spoke overlap???

  • tbh, I cant see the fault, Steves, what exactly has gone wrong?

  • it was supposed to be 3x! difficult to see in the pics, but just doesnt look even and symmetrical.....i'll get it back on saturday and make sure...

  • Deep V.. pimping a hybrid near you!

  • think it's because its 2x and you're using a large hub.

  • whats wrong with 2x and high flange? tell me please as I'm building one now!

  • nothing, just for why it looks weird (his is really big flange). 2x looks nice, but is edgy for a rear if you are big.

  • i'm big, mainly length rather than girth. do you think I'll have a problem riding 2x rear?

  • your call! i'd ride it, but i'm around 70kg's. also depends on rim.

  • you also have to factor in the torque from the disc brake. As well as the direction of the leading and trailing spokes.

I personally wouldnt run a 2x wheel on a disc wheel. Front or Back

  • interesting thread, nice one guys.

  • Where are you, your absence has been noted!

  • despite the wine swilling bike "engineer" co**- up on the back wheel the DV hybrid is still riding well... and yes lovelies!... it's got gears...
