London Cycling Charity?

  • hello, i wondered if anyone on here knows of any good pro cycling charities in london that i could volunteer with? cheers

  • re-cycle - Essex, not London, but worth a look?

  • What do you mean by pro-cycling? Cycling focussed? LCC? www.lcc.org.uk

i just mean a group that encourages cycling, gets people involved in cycling and thinking about environmental issues, i looked at LCC but they only offer internships and i work full time so need something i can do in my spare time

  • LCC - with all it's borough groups.
    CTC
    Roadpeace
    Sustrans
    LifeCycle

They all accept volunteers in some fashion and are active in London to a degree. There's also the Cyclists Defence Fund but I'm not sure if they're a charity yet.

  • great, thanks very much. i'll take a look at those

  • On a similar note, I come across a lot of bikes through my work (recycling) that are decent but we (as a company) can't sell without incurring cost ourselves - and I don't like seeing them crushed and melted down. The recent thing that came up and was interesting got given away here (this Vitus) and any others that might ring the bell of folk here would likely go here too. But for the other stuff - low end mountain bikes, kids bikes, that sort of thing - are there any refurb charities, free bike schemes or whatever I could give them to? I've looked around in the past but haven't come across much.

  • There's a guy in Brixton who takes bikes as part of a scheme to get younger (8-13 year olds) to take up cycling.

I had some chats with AndyP (on here) about setting up a CIC or a Social Enterprise to refurb and distribute bikes, but as we were both working its not gone any further.

Have you tried LCRN - London Community Recycling Network, the CE is a very keen cyclist (and ex Lambeth CC chair i think), they might have some pointers as I know they've advised two other people to do the bike recycling thing recently. www.lcrn.org.uk/

  • Look everyone, I've learnt how to use the search function!

A question about London Cycling - is it worth becoming a member. For me, it is cheap as a student. Is the magazine any good?

  • LCC - have a word with Oliver S. He is very involved and a very very decent chap. If he thaws out after TrixieDix he will be happy to answer any questions you might have on the subject.

  • I'm a member and think it's well worth it (just incase you are after the unbiased opinion of someone who doesn't work for them!)... I wouldn't say the magazine is amazing, but combined with the free legal advice, 3rd party insurance and 10% discount at most cycle shops...

I've only been a member for 3 months and I've already recuped almost half the cost in discounts...

  • I work at a environmental charity in South london if that's any good for you, we're always on the lookout for volunteers. Our cycle projects include Gear Up (cycling for all project), teaching level 1-2 national standards to over 50's and families, Ecolocal deliveries and mobile cycle mechanic, Dr bikes, Recycling old bikes. Future possibles will be basic maintanence course to teenagers and adults and we're looking to start a new venture in one of the local parks to include most of the above but also hire out bikes.

Missed this thread completely the first time around, sorry, Clive. I think Paul-Michel did send me a PM about it at the time.
