  • It's summer time, at last, and I am looking for a nice gilet to keep in my pocket, more of a wind beater so that cycling home at night, after the cinema or pub, is more visible and warm. It may be worn in the morning too, so reflectivity isn't the most important thing, function is. Who makes the best, Assos? (dear) Rapha ? I've always liked Campagnolo jackets but fancy something different this time and don't own a Gilet.

Anyway price isn't as important as getting something I'm happy with and will wear for a good few years. Thanks for your thoughts.

  • The best value, in terms of fit, function and durability that I've had is a Gore Bike Wear one. Assos ones are not worth it - expensive and don't seem to last.

  • Giordana one is quite nice.

  • My old mesh-backed De Marchi is still going strong. Looks rubbish though, and would be nice if it had a pocket or two. Those Gore Helium ones do look good, but I'm waiting to see if Rollapaluza CC are getting hold of any for the new club kit range first...

  • gore ones are good, I use an endura thing, which has a nice high collar, for when you want to go dracula on someone's ass (neck)

goody, a thread about proper cycling things.

instead of hipsters, photos, design, architecture and fucking cameras

  • A hipster wouldn't be seen dead in a gillet. Unless we arranged it... and photographed it.

  • sorry - where is this summer you speak of?

  • I just got wetted upon, and I had no gilet

    not even a hat.

    it's raining.

    so it is.

  • Raining in your heart.

  • Just cut a couple of holes in a binliner, does the trick, cheap and lightweight. The Rapha ones make you look like you're wearing a carrier bag anyway.

  • It's Raining... I love Irma Thomas...
Raining In Memphis... I love Dan Penn...
Rain... I hate the Beatles, tho' that's a brilliant double A-side...
Didn't faux-fur gilets go out of fashion about 5 years ago?!? I bet RPM's got one in his rock 'n' roll closet... ;P
    IGMC...

  • I never had anything made of fur, except a burger or two.

had a bodywarmer in 1981 probably, like most kids

  • kids? you were 32

    weird.

  • special needs is as special needs does

  • you've ruined another thread

  • I never had anything made of fur

I demand to see your press cuttings!

  • they must have got swept up off the barbers floor in 1990!

Okay Bin liner it is, many thanks. Look out for me on the clerkenwell road with my neck poking out of the yellow drawstring and making a flapping sound in the wind.

  • If it's just for general stuff
    Gillet £8.99 from JJB.

  • Follow Johnny's example e.g. buy a Dannimac and take the sleeves off, guaranteed rad.

  • Right, does AndyP's recco of a Groe Gilet as the best value still hold true?

A decent gilet and some "autumn" gloves are what I am missing currently.

  • Over 3 years later, and the Gore one is still going strong.

Couldn't agree more my gore gilet is still going fine. I've got the one which is a jacket you can zip the arms off. Cost just over £100 but well worth the money imo.
