Freeing seized handlebar stems

  • ive just been given 2 old frames 1 TSUNODA japanese and 1 MOTOBECANE french any advice on unseizing stems would be appreciated thanks

  • spray in a load of wd40, let it soak then give it some elbow grease.
also you quite often need to hit the bolt in a quill stem to make it come out, even when it's not seized.
loosen the bolt off so that it's sticking up then give it a whack with something. i usually just leave the alan key sticking out the bolt then hit that with my fist (cos i'm a geordie and we geordies are hard as nails).

  • lol

Yeah what k said, gt85/wd40 leave for while then beat it off.

  • plus gas is supposed to be the best, but i can never find it.
in a nutshell: lube it up and give it a good fisting!

  • if it's a quill stem, first unscrew the bolt a little bit ,check if it's moving up and down, then if it's not (should be up) hammer it down, then lubricate and try to move the stem sideways, once that happens you're nearly there, if the problem perstsists, then put the frame upside down pour coca cola in there and let it soak overnight, that shold melt the rust and your problems.
    good luck

  • My stem was stuck solid.
    I tried:
Wacking it out with a hammer and steel rod
Twisting the forks and claping the stem(gave up and didnt want to damage the forks)
    20ton lift yanking the stem
    More hitting with a hammer
Strong penetrating fluid left for a couple of days
The one which worked was to put the stem in half, then half the halfs and clamping it in the vice. You might haveto cut in the stem slightly aswell. Only one which worked to get mine out.

  • Coke is it

  • Plus gas is what they use on trains to free siezed bits - widely available.

  • last resort is to sacrifice the stem and cut it off to free the fork from the frame, it might also render the fork redundent if you then cant get the rest of the stem out. but at least you can then use the frame....

try soaking in coke for a few days and see if that works.

    if not, chop it offffff

  • If you have to cut and are left with 1/2 the stem up the steerer tube, get a metal bar slightly smaller than the dia. of the steerer tube, stick it up between the forks and hit it hard with a lump hammer, believe me, it won't resist, keep the drift so your mates can use it.

  • Sometimes you have to admit defeat and let a stem and fork go. I tried everything on my Holdsworth - even shoved a metal bar down the steerer and hammered the life out of it. In the end I had to take a hacksaw to it - destroying the stem, fork and headset. When I got the fork out, the alu stem had totally fused with the steerer - you really couldn't see the join. You know then that would never have come out. The worst thing is that I've got another frame with exactly the same problem.

Prevention's the cure - but appreciate that's not always possible. I always use anti-seize on the stem, and it seems to work.

  • Ok having the same problem on the Moulton

Hve tried plus gas, wd40, vinigar, coke, ammonia. freeze spray and heat.

Any other ideas? Prefer no to sacrifice the forks and stem. Can't get to the underside of thestem because of the suspension.

    Cheers
