Shall I drill?

  • hey peeps i needs yo helps!

basically i decided to put a front brake and opted for Shimano Tiagra, however my frame is and old Harrier that i done up as a fixie, the front brake back hole is to small to allow the supplied and i guess standard hex key nut thing to go into the frame and hold the brakes. The orginal crusty brakes that came with the bike had a longer bolt andvarious washer and a nut to screw, easy.

I feel my options are to either drill to make th hole i bit bigger or just get a similar brake to the old one possibly slap on a good BMX brake? that i can hook up to dirty harry lever waiting to go on.
    what u tinks?
heres a pic of the fork:

  • enlarging a bit the hole should not be a huge problem for the forks IMHO

  • had the same problem, drilled mine, all good so far. Will go horribly wrong if it does though

  • i have front weinemann 500 calipers that will fit and are generally pretty good, also look the part for the frame.

  • the drop looks a bit long...are you sure the tiagras will even fit?

drilling the hole is fine, you usually drill the rear part to allow the allen bolt to sit through. the front hole doesn't normally need enlarging

thanks for that detail, I didn't know.

  • damn! drilled the hole no problems but shit u your were right RPM the Tiagra wont fit the drop is long!!
wat to do???! guess ill just have to ebay them unless anyone here want em?

  • oh by the way should i get a rear brake i dont feell i need it, but does the law require it? i dont know about these tings boss

  • measure the distance from the hole to the centre of the rim (directly) that'll give you the drop.

it's gonna be something like 50-60mm, yes?

    deep drop caliper brakes.

    search.

    hot pan.

    olive oil.

    SJS cycles.

    etc..

    places like that..

  • Take the allen bolt into a decent hardware place and get a good quality high speed drill of the right size, you can put the drill end to end with the bolt and compare the diameters. An decent battery drill will do the job, square it up properly or get a friend to eye it up, pull the trigger and go, when it starts to come through, chances are it will stick, reverse it out and go again with less pressure, stop as soon as it goes through, keep the drill in a safe place for forks only, sharp. Forks look so much better with allen bolts.

no-one really notices, to be honest. and old frames tend to look better with original components.

I´d need a deep drop brake too, but riding a shimano 105. Took a drill and extended the holes further down a few mm. Only half the brake pads touch the rim which isn´t very good at all I guess, but it works fine so kept it. Living on the edge or something

is it just me or does this seem a little bit dodgy? i can't help but feel 'extended the holes down a few mm' smacks of 'catastrophic fork failure in the near future'.

so yes - to the living on the edge bit.

  • I'd rather use a Nobrake than a bodge like that TBH, a weakened fork with brake pads that don't make contact properly isn't going to impress Naomi Campbell..

    or Jet from gladiators.

  • it breaks my heart to see her on this website:

  • I've got the same prob. (pics and crap here: http://www.londonfgss.com/post205801-19.html )

    Cue Double Entendres
Would anyone advise me going at the hole with a small fine file tool? Would it be a quick job?

  • Shall I Drill?

  • Of the top of my head billysbmx have some deeeep drop (up to 70 ish mm) brakes dual pivot cheapish. Try there good luck.

  • is this the porn thread or I"m in the wrong place?

  • If the hole on the underside of your fork is suitable (mine happened to be exactly 20mm) then you can buy some aluminium stock (or whatever), drill two holes in it and end up with a reasonably discrete drop-bolt:

  • Do as pj (pj) says... Buy a Weinmann, I've got a rear (72mm drop) you can have for the price of a beer, you'll need a longer bolt but it'll work nicely and look right... My Mercian looks tons better now I've taken the long drop Tektro off... Actually, I'll sell you that if it's long enough for ya, 65mm drop, complete with Dirty Harry lever, cable and housing...

    holy fucken bodge hell!!

do not ever ride behind me.

  • It's not that bad.

It's a whole lot sturdier than Sheldon's suggested drop bolts made from old reflector brackets. There's a good 3cm inside the fork, and it fits pretty snug.

At least it's not as bad as my first solution with aluminium tube instead of solid bar...

  • holy fucken bodge hell!!

Christ's fat cock, you better hope that aluminium strip holds when charging down hil a la fiddy ditchling.
