Compiled from my various searches for threads on here
Formula/System X hubs (with Shimano DA lockring and track nut upgrade, maybe change bearings too)
CXP33 rims for a compromise between weight and looks
Sapim DB spokes available from Evans on The Cut for 50p each with silver alloy nipples. -

goldtec hubs, so they wont fail
black brass nipples usuly 5p more then silver, so that would make them 5p

Black high flange Phils x black Sapim Lasers (they're black metal and won't scratch as opposed to DTs which are painted) x CXP33s (don't get deep-Vs if you want light wheels!)...
Or get some Condor branded Miche hubs if the budget won't stretch that far, they're cheaper...
Paul Comp hubs are nice too (and a bit different), they're cheaper than Phils and probably just as good... Goldtech hubs if you can find them in black...
That's my tuppence...

What is your price range?
I'd go for Goldtec hub, DT swiss competition double butted spokes, black spoke nipples, and then... either Mavic Open Pro or if you're after something a bit different Velocity aerohead although you'll probably have trouble getting them here.
I use the above with Open Pro CD.
I wouldn't for anything too bling if it's your first wheel. My first wheels weren't that great compared to the ones I build now.

For spokes check out www.53-12.com, they'll sell you boxes of 20, any lengths you want... They sorted me out last year when no one else could, all it took was a phone call... Think I paid £30 for two boxes inc. P&P... Not a bad price!

Black hubs, black rims, black spokes.**** I don't want to spend a fortune**** but I wantwhatever I do build to last and be light in weight.
=)I think he mean cheap

I'm amazed deep V rims have been suggested. He said light.
And Phil Wood hubs?! You must be kidding. VanUden said he doesn't want to spend a fortune. Phils are about as expensive as they come.
I'm puzzled why aero rims have been mentioned too. Open Pros are 35g lighter than CXP33s. If you want aero rims, but for the wheel to be strong and light, go for less spokes, e.g. 28. Read The Bicycle Wheel by Jobsts Brandt for why.

buy 2nd hand set of those pista wheels off dolan

if you want light you go for carbon, speak of 35g of difference is a laugh
any way he has all the info he need to make his head up

i just had some built by arup, who's on here a bit. I had black goldtecs, black DT spokes (didn't know the sapims were black to the bone...) and cxp33s. Hardly even ridden them yet as i've been getting the rest of the parts together but they feel pretty smooth and light. I figured i'd spend an extra few quid in the hope they would last alot longer. All in i think they came to 250ish. not cheap but if you went for formula hubs or something it would knock about 60 quid off. More if you get those super cheap on-one hubs. Maybe search for the thread on replacing the bearings in cheaper hubs with much better quality replacements. I think that might be the key to cheap and good quality.

Got Black Phil hubs (expensive) on black gloss Araya rims (cheap) on my Gazelle, but forewent the hassle of black spokes. Actually I quite like the way they glint in the subshine.

had a set of these, joe.s has got them. nice wheels.
Sorry to keep asking questions like this but you guys know your stuff, so it's your fault really. And yes I have done a search.
I'm doing the wheel building class that playswellwithotters has very kindly organised and I want to build some black wheels for the Gazelle. Black hubs, black rims, black spokes. I don't want to spend a fortune but I want whatever I do build to last and be light in weight. It'll be fixed and front brake only.
Any thoughts chaps/chapesses?
Thanks.
=)
