  • first post.. hey people

chain reaction offering 60% off principia track jet frameset..
are these any good.. can't seem to find any info.
any info on sizing, geometry etc would be much appreciated :)

toss up between that or a full priced giant omnium.

end build will be a superlight SS road bike

  • hey.

this was posted a few days ago.. they only have 53 and 55 cm frames left i think. how tall are you?

  • i am 5 10

used to ride medium giant...and 56cm trek

  • This might not bother you but for me the welds on that frame for an original RRP of over £900 are shocking.

  • There's a reason why they find the need to give 60% off. Might seem like a good deal. But if I had a budget of 300 to 400 there's lots of other frames I'd rather look at.

  • it's an older model.

of course, that doesn't mean it's not good.

  • thanks for the responses.

who would go for this instead of a full priced giant omnium?

  • Cavendish have IRO Mark V frames at £180 - and the Angus @ £230 - pretty good frames for the price.

  • from a previous thread (search function can be handy)

Those frame are far from rubbish .. Principia's where handmade with custom to Principia tubing and they are regarded as probably the very best Alloy frames you could buy at the time - the Danish track team used a similar frame to the one advertised - any defect in the finish or the perfect tig welds and the frame was rejected by the craftsmen making them in Denmark, which is believed to be why they went bust!

Principia make absolutely superb high end alu track racing frames. Don't buy it though if your sick of you 60's British steel frame and are looking for an upgrade to ride around London. Pure racing machines these.

Principia frames are an alu/viagra mix ;)

  • A few guys had them down the track some years ago.....highy respected, fast machines....Linda Mcartney used to ride them...the team that is nlt the dead cook / photo taker....

  • I'd agree with Winston's assessment - Principia frames have a reputation for being very well made and perfect for racing. They are very, very stiff though, even by normal aluminium standards. Perfect for racing on at Herne Hill, probably not so good for cruising the streets of London town.

Actually, I think someone was riding on, all black, at Herne Hill this morning, it had Elite cycling in white writing on the down tube.

  • Yeah but how old is "older model". Coz Principia went out of business so it's likely the name was purchased and there are now inferior products being made with the Principia brand on them. Similar story with GT bikes and possibly Raleigh?

  • They temporarily went out of business - I believe they are still going strong;

  • I bought the frame. No idea when I'm able to finish what I started, but at least I have something to spend my money on.

And Trev from chainreactioncycles warned me that the frame is not drilled for a rear brake. So might be a bit of a challenge to turn it into a superlight SS road bike. This mostly to Sam814.

  • Hey,

I am looking for a red Track Jet ( 53-57cm, 55cm or 56cm would be perfect ) If anybody wants to sell his frame or knows where I can get one contact me :)

    Jonas

  • I'm pretty sure the older RSL where Jet Black Anodized only.

  • I have found a red one:

  • Nice .. Is it yours ?

  • no ;( I have forgotten to say I have found only a picture ;) but I am looking for such a frame.

  • So, I bought the frame in August of 2008. Finally got it running in Aug 2011.

I have to say I like the ride. The handling feels more relaxed than my Bareknuckle, and I really cannot say if it that much more stiff, but it is light and fast. And it is my first fixed gear in a while. I have been riding single-speeds for a good year and a half.

And I have a Principia road bike too. I got that frame off CRC as well. It is now wearing SRAM Rival and Fulcrum 3s. Compared to the Columbus SLX road bike I had, the difference was huge. The Principia is a weapon. And the steel frame felt so relaxed compared to it (not that that was a bad thing).

Anyone else riding Principias, here? Pics, maybe? (I try to shoot mine, at some point.)

    It's a very nice!

I have Oval on my Evolution SX, but it's not carbon.

Took the decals off my track frame, but left some of them on the road frame. Thinking back I think I should've done the same with the track one. The matte black frame looks pretty boring with nothing adding any detail to it.

  • Thanks .. the only reason I have carbon Oval is a hand down from my road bike when I decided to put the track bike onto the road ..

Maybe you can get some new ones from Principia. Although it's not the original company they may be able to sort you out with some if you drop them a mail.

    Yeah. I might try that.

  • I've got a Principia Rex track frame, Time forks and seatpost, Chris King headset - waiting to be fully built up.

Fyi Skunkworks, I got new decals from Principia who we're pretty helpful

I've also got an RSL as my road bike which is great - not even had a service since 2005. I'm a great fan of the original principias and suspect them to be as good if not better than the original Cannondale alu bikes
