Wanted: Sugino RD Chainset

Posted on
  • Before I shell out for a brand new one, does anyone have a Sugino RD chainset/crankset, in fairly good condition, that they want to sell me? Looking for 165mm with a 1/8" chainring.

    Thanks

  • yeah m a r i e I just bought one of these which is winging its way to me now. Yipeee!!!

dh cyclesport price is good value compared to what London lbses are asking.

  • arrived today - great though curiously without "Sugino RD" on it as in picture...

just "Sugino". Arms are stamped with logo though...... I guess they're RDs.......

  • the old ones said RD the new ones don't, i think

  • I've also had RD's from DH sports in the past - they are good value and, contrary to the picture used in their ebay sales, not the re-purposed 170mm versions with SuginoRD printed near the axle (check the offset drilling of the pedal thread) but the true 165mm versions ...which would explain the differences you've noticed PJS...

  • cheers flickwg, even if you're just trying to calm my worries you've made everything okay now..;)

EDIT: oh man, this sounds even better - cheers too, Sammy Dodger!

They do look beautiful, I much prefer the shiny stuff, a sign of my naivete most likely.. this build is starting to look very tasty...

  • Naa you're right on shiny, black is wack

Except anything Emilie builds of course

  • yeah you said at westies last week skull - I'm right there with you.

Though I do have an idea for a bike with black components that would look dope....ironically I think it came to me cos you had said about not liking black stuff and I was thinking on the way home what kind of build would lead me to embrace it.....! who knows...for now it's shiny all the way..

  • so the sugino's rds from dhcycles are worth the mullah? trying to convince myself the money saved versus the miche primatos/stronglights is a flase economy

  • I got some brand new of ebay for £49.95 & they are good, not excellent, just good

  • yep but £49.95's a good price too.

chainring inc. for that for y'all who don't know..

  • Agreed, it is a good price

I remember a friend saying they were £75 in BLB, I suppose they've gotta eat

  • what do we reckon in comparison to the fsa/rpm cranks?

I think they look nicer much different in the way of quality?

  • I think the concensus would normally be that the RDs are superior.

    they are also lovelier.

  • What cheap bottom brackets are they compatible with?
im on a tight budget but they look much nicer then the FSA set

  • I'm pretty happy with my RDs. The 103mm bottom bracket won't give you a 42mm chainline though. The old RDs would but they newer ones give 43 to 43.5mm, but I've go no noise problems.

  • I'm on a shimano bb, cheap as they come for about 15 sheets. I didn't want any shimano on my bike, ended up with bb and clipless as they were clearly the best options for my budget, hands down.

Can't remember the exact bb model though so not going to hazard it.

I think it ended up being 110mm - working with a 126mm rear spacing my chain is also not exactly right, but as near as dammit frankly, I mean it's pretty damn close, though I probably will swap it and get ultra anal about getting it right in the next few weeks..

  • Same combination as pajamas - can't afford to be too anal but shimano un54 works fine with my RDs and plenty of length options

  • I got the Sugino BB for about 18GN when bought with the cranks and ring from DH. Not that much more than Shimano and it's seems to do the business. Chainline works out at 45mm for me for some reason.

I think the RD's are light, but the hand finishing looks like someones been at it with an angle grinder. I was a bit disappointed at first but they've done the job so far.
