Possible paint to use under a powder coating?

Hi All,

Just had a chat to Steve at Armourtex regarding which paint (maybe polyurethane if any) can withstand the heat used to bake the gloss coat. If a suitable paint can be found then it is theoretically possible for armourtex to do the colour coat, you then take it away to lug line by hand and then return it for a gloss coat.

I've made no progress on the paint as it needs to withstand 200 degrees, but apparently someone called Richard has been in and has managed to find a way of doing this, Richard are you on here? Anyone else got any ideas?

get oven proof paint that they paint fire places and stoves, exhausts with?!?

Worth a test although I'm specifically looking for red. Armourtex said that cellulose based paints are a no no, they've had good results putting 2 pack polyeurethane over the top of powder coat i.e. after the heat treatment, but they don't know if its doable between the coats.

you can get the exhaust/heat proof paint in a few different colours.

exhaust paint, fire surround paint.
you won't be able to powder coat over the painted parts though.

OK, update time:

I've ordered a tin of gloss single part polyeurathane enamel, this is good to 150 degrees.

Armoutex are very sceptical so I'm going to just go with the base coat and gloss coat and then line the lugs over the top of the final coat as then no heat is involved. For the furure I will pick up a piece of scrap and check out putting the paint between the two plastic coats and I'll let you all known what I find out.

why not just get them to do a single gloss coloured coat???

google VHT paint. very high temperature—apparently you can get it to resist up to 600 deg C approx........ used for painting exhaust manifolds, engine blocks etc

Why not line the lugs over the clear?

I put my decals on the clear and they have been fine. Lugs are generally pretty hard to knock with other objects. Seems kind of pointless.

How do they put a gloss coat over colour in this case? Is baked powdercoat conductive?

Yep, the powder is electrostatically charged and the thing your coating earthed, so the powder sticks to the metal due to static, if your subject you are powdercoating will not conduct then the powder will not stick. then you bake it at 200deg for 20 mins to melt/bake/bond the powder to the metal

Personally I'd go with signwriters paint (google hotrod pinstriping supplies for a supplier)
for lug lining over powder coat, it should stick well enough and as said above its not a high wear area, if you cock it up then use nitromorse to remove the paint and start again, it wornt touch the powder coat.
