Best Pedals for backward circles?

I have been practising backward circles with regular unclipped pedals, and can now do half a backward circle. However, when the pedals hit 6/12 oclock, I lose balance due to no pedal drive.
I am not confident enough doing this trick with my SPD pedals/shoes. Do I need clipped pedals with straps? Or can it be done wih regular pedals by angling the pedal stroke by standing and leaning forwards?

i do them unclipped. i can do lots of them. i think you lose balance because of lack of pace adn the fact that your centre of balance shifts.

I've had the same problem but with backwards backwards circles any ideas?

not that i can do this... but foot under the pedal or is this a silly sugestion?

i've seen you do those tommy. i'm sure what you mean though.

no foot under pedal. just do it, get into rhythm. generally, stand up.

ive been doing them with flat pedals, no straps.

Well, actually about 300* of a circle at most but only been trying for a week.

running 52-19 with 27 inch wheel

keep working at it...one day you will get it.
doing such tricks on your bike increases your bike control....nimbus you might want to try it.

smaller bikes also help.

Try riding your bike backwards during your daily commute. this will help you to get the hang of it in circles.

My fixed hackster is on a 67" gear inch ratio. Will continue to pursue with the flat pedals. Nimhbus, one day I might grow up but until then tricks rule!
