there's always a bit of flex from steel. has it just got worse or has it always been like this

Could be your brakes getting a bit of play in them.
XT v-brakes on a carbon fork on my ebay bike vibrate and squeal like anything.

yeah, most likely your brakes slipping a bit. Steel forks are supposed to bend, a little. That's why steel is good for comfort. It's not good however, if they start flexing more than usual, could be a crack in the blade or the steerer/fork interface.

Just seems more noticeable recently, will take them off and check for damage.
Thanks!

(doom-monger time...)
Flexing forks...That'll cost yer!
Last time that happened to me, a few miles later I had one working fork blade and the other only attached by paint and a track nut - big split across the right fork next to the crown.Check for cracks good fellow, or risk a face plant.
Or, your brakes could be loose.
Noticed the forks under braking flex a fair bit and get a bit juddery.
Nipped up the head bearings, but sounds like they could be on their way out, perhaps?
What says the FG massive?
