the white chain on my polo bike has kept suprisingly clean, as long as you wipe it down and not go overboard with the lube.

Really it should be no different to any new chain cleaning / installation process if done properly as you should be completely disassembling your chain before installation anyhow. I only really bother to do this for my road bike personally, but the results are spectacular. See here for full instructions.
