  • after many conversations about riding fixed with colleagues, customers, and other 'tards, i have found the easiest way to LEARN to ride fixed, and learn hop-skids!

Basically you can do this on either a road bike with a flip-flop hub (one side must be fixed!) also do-able on a mountain bike, as long as it has disc rotor mount on the hub.

Basically set up the drivetrain on the driveside, singlespeed, using a tensioner if need be, get that running sweetly,

    THEN;

Setup another R/H side (driveside) crank arm, on the L/H side, running fixed but an easier ratio, therefore, you can run say 38/16 on the driveside, for a higher top end speed, and on the non-drive-side, you could run 38/13, so it is easier for you to hob skid, as there is less force on your legs,

    Tah-dah!

possibly the option of a very badly drawn paint diagram later-on!

  • that will not work, it'll still be a fixed drivetrain

  • yes, but you will be able to accelerate, then not pedal AS fast, as the fixed ration will be less than the 'drive' ration

  • wouldn't you be accelerating at the lower (fixed) ratio, as well?

  • @ OP: nope

  • wouldn't you be accelerating at the lower (fixed) ratio, as well?

    yep, fixed means fixed.

the freewheel side won't engage, or will it knock on and off, and freewheel until it picks up again?

whatever, the fixed side will rule the roost

  • you can run say 38/16 on the driveside, for a higher top end speed, and on the non-drive-side, you could run 38/13,

for your theory, this is back to front.

    38/13 is the HARDER ratio

  • @Cheesecake.

You build it, and tell us if it works.

I don't think it will work, but if it does work, then enjoy riding it.

  • doesn't matter what ratio the Fixed is, or the Single-speed is, the fixed is fixed and will dominate the drivetrain. as is with maths, its the numerator !!

  • fucketyshitebollocks, i put the ratios the wrong way round, and made myself sound like a complete pleb. god bless you all.

  • haha made my day. PLEB! lmao!

  • cheesecake international you are a bounder and a pioneer.

  • cheesecake international you are a bounder and a pioneer.

indeed i am, i believe i am also the inventor of the original fixed gear kona fire mountain, that was left hand drive too!

However, each have there downfall, and mine appears to be making a pleb out of myself on internet forums.

fuck this, im going to play GTA4 and eat yogurt.

  • whatever way you do it it will either freewheel and be fixed or fixed and break the chain on the freewheel side as it tries to turn the freewheel faster than the fixed.
having drawn my own diagram and given it a bit of thought i think the freewheel will explode and/or the chain will snap

  • i wanna see some footage... and no more of your diagrams :)

  • ok, will get this into action tomorrow, may well show the guys down at the Brighton ride!

  • I really want this to work, because if it does I'm doing it to the speedway bike of doom....

  • could this idea work with a double freewheel, but there would be a weird bit as you swap between forward and rear pressure as the freewheels disengage and engage

  • edit, i found out.

  • no the harder gear will always be the one driving, stop pedaling and they will both freewheel.
there was a double freewheel bike with one reversed next to the normal freewheel and an idler that let the chain go round both, stop pedaling then pedal backwards to climb hills in an easier ratio.

  • edited because i got confused between lpg and pj and because i am a mong

  • This will not work it will just be the fixed gearing if its lower, if its higher you'll probably get the wheel twisting out the frame with various bits snapping.

  • what kind of yoghurt?

  • bollock?
