  • can anyone recommend anything good, i don't know much about this stuff. if anyone can recommend a good pedal and even a good shoe too. i've ridden some of those shimano caged pedals a while ago on my old mountain bike, since i was thinking the cage would be a good compromise so i could ride in trainers from time to time. they turned out to be pointless and slippy as fook. anyways, yeah, any pointers? thanks all :D

  • Am I the only one who uses Egg Beaters? No good if you want to ride in trainers once in a while, though.

  • Get some Time Atac pedals. Time are wizard ;]

  • i shall investigates! thanks scott et al

  • spds = poor mans choice

atacs = great if you have the money

eggbeaters = less good if you skid

There was thread a while back. You can take an old pair of skate shoes, fit the insole/base from a old cycle shoe, shoe goo/glue it in. Then cut a recessed section out of the sole for the cleat.

  • Time ATAC and sidi mtb shoes.

    the millionaires choice

  • SPD's - £13 for pedal and cleat.

replacement cleats cost £10 though (work that one out!)

neat, thanks man, i'll look it up, got some old cycle shoes and stuff lying around, might be good... anyone tried it?

Good point. I don't skid, which is why I don't feel the difference. I see what you mean, though - my feet don't feel completely locked onto the pedal.

Yeah I saw a few people last summer sporting them.

    Ma3k made some up.

  • I'm digging Speedplay frogs at the moment - I have knee trouble and they have the most rotational float, with no spring loaded autocentering. Also, the pedals are black and match my frame ;-0

Unfortunately, the cost about one megabuck.

EDIT - Woo Hoo, this is my 1000th post.

  • Do you want to walk around in the shoes ? If so any of the above are good and Look have started doing MTB pedals again, the Quartz range. If you don't need to walk around then Look Keo, Shimano SPD-SL, Time and Speedplay all have their fans.

I have them, like them a lot, pants with trainers though.

It's so weird... normally i just buy new pedals to get the cleats :)

I like SPD's, mostly because they are cheap enough to use on more than one bike, and they work just fine..

  • eggbeaters and sidis for me personally

  • Not quite bottom-of-the-line SPDs + dirt cheap (on-sale) Nikes. Budget, but no complaints at all (the opposite in fact).

  • atacs all the way. Worth every extra penny.
Solid as a rock, no accidental midskid unclipping, just ace.
I'm going to be a bit adventurous when I have the time and try and recess an atac cleat in some old tigers I have.....
    might work, who knows...

  • I love my Time ATACs..

  • egg beaters are fine for skidding, never unclipped

  • me egg beater unclipped tonight, skidding up to a junction, i think it looked pretty cool as my leg flew up in the air.

I guess I must have twisted my foot a little too far..

  • I like the ease of engage/disengage with the dickbeaters, but don't like the shitness of the build quality and the loose feel once clipped in.
and I've not unclipped when skidding, I tend to stamp down a lot rather than pull up on a skid, and make sure my feet don't do the waggle dance

just ordered some time aliums, will see what they are all aboot

  • Time atacs. Bar none.
