I had that happen to me some years back on my MTB, scared the crap outta me!!!
Luckily just going slowly when it happened! -

Just had fixed a puncture on it and left the bike in the kitchen to get some sleep at 3 last night then heard a massive bang, went out to see the that.

Nah, a pale green sofa.
The rim is an ancient MA2, i reckon it had just developed some sort of weakness and couldn't take the pressure any more.
