  • Monday: Flat rear on the way to work. Had a look at lunchtime and find a fucking massive dagger of glass impaling the inner. Carefully take it out, repair inner, off I go.

Tuesday: Flat rear on the way to work AGAIN. This time no dagger of glass but I can see where something’s punched through the outer and left a tiny hole in inner. Re-repair.

Wednesday: Flat front on way home form work. Repair on side of road. Get home, and once again I can see where something’s punched through but nothing left in the hole.

Thursday: YET ANOTHER flat rear on way to work. Swear, repair at lunch. No glass – just another hole. Got home last night and took the whole bastard apart, turned the tyre inside out and checked over and over – did same with rim. Nothing there.

Today: Just gone out for a fag break and the fucking front is flat again.

A whole week of flats, both wheels. After six months of nothing. Am I gonna have to fork out for new tyres? I have Conti GP Forces on both wheels (yeah I know they’re rear wheel specific but hey – they’re meant to be tougher.)

Never had such a phenomenon before though – it’s like both tyres have overnight lost all ability to resist punctures.

  • Sounds like your riding around bad roads for glass. Maybe a change of route would do you better than a change of tyres.

  • Hops is going through the same thing, she's currently on ten punctures for this week!

  • yeah i s'pose - only good thing is i'm getting some good tyre changing experience

  • These didn't all happen on New North Road did they?
I managed to get 3 puncture in 2 days on the same stretch of road there.

  • Similar happened to me last year, thought I'd checked the inside of the tyre thoroughly, found THE thinnest sliver of glass after giving it a proper going over. Thing was it was only just through the tyre wall so took a good 6 miles between changes before it punctured again. Was starting to get freaked out by it to be honest.

Both tyres though? Sound like you need some new ones.

  • New Cross is the place for p*******s.
    (and gun crime)

  • Sometimes you just need to throw the tyres and inners away and start again

  • wot i do.

is take the tyres off every fortnight or so and dig out all the glass etc - with the end of metal nail file.

it seems to work for me as my puncture ratio has gone down a lot.

yeah and buy new tyres about every four months.

Remember you telling me about that at the 1yr party - have been doing the same myself now. Amazing how much gets stuck in there.

Often wet weather washes glass, pebbles etc out from the gutter further into the road - nearly all my punctures occur in wet weather (sods law that you have to repair them in the wet too).

  • Hey, I've got an idea! Lets have a thread about what the best tyres are.

  • http://www.greentyre.co.uk/courier.html Only for 27" Wheel though.

    Joke by the way

  • i had an 8 month run without a single puncture cuz i switched to armadillos, then i've had 3 in the last week... they're pretty worn now though, need some new ones...

  • I do head down New North Rd every day... interesting that a couple of you say that about it - i also suspect commercial street's a bit dodgy. Really though I'm gonna try and make it through til payday (3 weeks!) and put tyres at the top of my 'things to buy for bicycle' list. Which is long.

  • 12 punctures in 8 days, albeit in separate bikes and four different wheels. But still this is incredibly unlucky. Now before you jump to conclusions, I did fix them all correctly - they were all in different places. The tyres weren't even that old... CONTINENTAL GRAND PRIX 4 SEASONS are shit. I am going back to Schwalbe Stelvio Plus.

  • My mate was riding on Conti Grand Prix 4 when he got his flat this afternoon. It was a classic rear tyre snakebite.

  • Well I've been riding in for the last couple days looking closely at the ground and I've found the spot - please see my diagram for a detailed glass map:

So yeah maybe Contis ARE shit - any suggestions for a good solid tyre that has colours and is not pig ugly like an armadillo undeniably is...

I know that corner well, I think that's outside a bar where the punters drop glasses and bottles with abandon when the weather gets a little warmer. Particularly dodgy on a Monday morning that one.

  • So there is broken glass on the paved area outside the Foundry? The place where people stand, er ..., drinking beer.

the "stelvio plus" is what i use and it looks good too with white writing on the side wall. I had the same phenomenon where i had 3 punctures during a week on my way to uni. massive letdown when your late etc. cos a
    of a friggin tyre.

since these tyres, not one puncture or even a hint of one. happy days.

  • "here be glass"

    :D

  • I tried out a pair of those greetyres, when I was a courier.....my advice is don't.
