  • Does the steamroller (surly, not the road flattening thing (thought I'd get that in (and a couple for parentheses for good measure(did I say "a couple"? I meant a few)))) attracts the same criticism as the Langster? Not that I give a shite, love mine.

  • No, not at all.

  • few things attract the same criticism as a langster, certainly not a surly.
    child porn and mugs perhaps

  • nothing attract the same criticism as the langster. nothing.

i used to have a steamroller (the surly(notthe road, etc.) and loved it too. and i would quite like a langster.

  • i love mine.

  • Only regret I have , (and this is not a reflection on the steamroller) having had mine for about a year is that I wish I'd been a little less impatient about getting a shiny new bike and researched the possibility of getting second hand frame and building something myself. I'll get around to that one day I guess. Itching to have a go at building one but budget and new baby dictate otherwise at the moment, as well as a dissertation that ain't gonna write itself (or possibly,be written by me).

  • suryly is a fantastic sturdy ride and very light. Excellent survivor of accidents, so solid and beautiful in grey. I could not bear it if someone slagged off a surly.

did you get yours built for you?

i quite like shiny new bikes.

  • I'm with you there, I still have all the decals on, am considering taking off the great big surly off the down tube and the ones on the forks. There seems to be plenty of stuff on the interweb on how to do this but usually involves scraping with a scalpel, which I'm a little afraid of doing. I like the plainer look, all those stickers make it look like a cereal box barffed all over it.

  • Shinscar - Brixton Bikes built it for me, am very pleased with their work.

  • no, its well easy... hair dryer and i used a coin (gently)

  • I really like them. One reason is the vast variety of different ways you can set them up from Objects brakeless with flat bar set up to road style fixed I have even seen a photo somewhere of someone putting studded tyre on it and using it in the snow!

  • Having been a recent convert to the steamroller, i'm impressed. Very sturdy, pretty well made and looks pretty good in different guises. Not so expensive that i have a heart attack when i lock it up outside for a while either.

    I'm smitten...

  • plenty on here... http://www.flickr.com/groups/417924@N22/
not all good but tommy's point visualized.

  • I fucking hate Surly...

Seriously mine has taken an absolute beating over the last 3 years and it's still going stong. I throw it around everywhere, down set of steps. Into the floor. It's done offroading, plenty of decent lengthed rides too.
To give you an idea of how many good things there are to say about steamrollers find Mack and myself at the next social event. We'll rant until you're bored to tears and end up walking away from us in horror.

Not sure on the component choices if you wanted off the peg though, as they were frame and forks only when I purchased mine.

You could do a lot worse,

  • I got my decals off no probs, tender persuasion with a plastic knife then white spirit on a cloth. NO scarcthes at all.

  • Ha ha, I had cyclocross tyres on over winter coz was a little worried with my slicks in the rain (prob made no difference but coz they were fatter gave me a little more confidence) and I think they looked really nice. Saying that though, now I have the slicks (23mm) back on I like it all over again like I did last when I first got it.

Quite fancy playing around with the look of it when I get time (has aero bars, mavic cpx33 laced to surly hubs, black brooks saddle, cane creek headset, bontranger stem (would change that first I think)). Don't get me wrong I really like the way it is but it's in human nature to fix things when they aren't broken (well in this human's nature). Wuite liekt he idea of chaing to some shiny drop bars but I guess would need to change the headset to complete the look. You're right it is very changeable.

I guess I'll need that seconfd job after all ;-)

Thanks for the tip, am slowly becoming convinced.

    Are you foreign?

I was very much tempted by Surly as a beater but a Surly is slightly above beating in my book. So, I'm saving myself a few quid in comparison and going for a Fuji Track. Nice bike chap, enjoy.

  • My surly is my beater :]

  • are the decals under clearcoat on a surly??

  • Nope, over the top. They're really easy to pick off too.

  • surlys kick ass, Fatties Fit Fine and all that ;)

  • My surly is my beater :]

    Show off!

careful! the interweb says use a plastic tyre lever.

Had mine built at Brixton too. Put lots of bling on. I even quite like the bloody stool brown.

+1 on the solidity. mine fared much better than me in my t-bone incident.
