  • Hi there,

Tried using the search function but didn't find anything....

But i just bought a new bike which had cinelli drop bars, but i would quite like to get some risers just because i prefer them.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Looking for something like these...

    Any help would be appreciated,

    Cheers!

    Dave

just look for something that has a comfortable curve, and make sure you know if youre gonna cut it down that there is still enough space for your hands

  • How old are the bars?

Cinelli bars sometimes have a very specific clamp diameter, which may mean you also need to get a new stem. (If your stem is Cinelli, too, this is likely the case).

  • Yes, you will. And I want a new Cinelli stem, for my Cinelli bars. If yours is fairly short and you want to offload it give me a shout.

  • apparently they are brand new, not sure the model or anything. The stem is not cinelli, its a deda newton 26...

don't know too much about it all though..

i appreciate all this help, cheers!

  • Ah, you should be fine, then - although most MTB bars (and, for that matter, track drops) are a 25.4mm clamp, whereas the Deda Newton 26, as it's name suggests, is a 26.0mm clamp. Nitto (and, I'm sure, a few other companies) make a shim for this exact purpose which should cost you less than a fiver.

    (it's halfway down the page)

  • cool, thanks for the help!

gonna look at the easton EA30...

    cheeers!

  • you could buy the shim, or you could just cut up a coke can and save yourself a couple of beers. :)

^^ that's what I do (replace coke with grape soda) to keep my risers in my old cinelli stem.

Just make sure you use an aluminium can. Seriously.

  • I have found the thicker metal on tuna cans is perfect and almost the perfect width already.

  • Loving the colour, does it have a Llewlyn-Bowenesque name or is it just light blue?

  • Dave, I just found a pair of steel mtb risers in the street, you want them? They seem to be 25.4-26.0, haven't got calipers to hand, quite a deep rise and 10 deg pitch...
They're silver, shiny but heavy... You've got first dibs if you want them...
    Joe :)

  • What was the bike like they were attached to? ;-)

    +1

  • Wow thanlks very much!! yeah ill take them if you're sure??!

anyone want to buy some cinelli bars?? ha

'tis an aluminium can, what else are they made of these days?

    & why is it important?

Some cans are still made of steel (easily spotted, because they stick to magnets, aluminium does not - learned that from Blue Peter when I was about ten).

The reason you need to use aluminium rather than steel for a shim is that, over time, steel compresses and aluminium does not.

Shim + compression = eventual 'ouch' moment.

    • Steel rusts - aluminium doesn't - and as you will be cutting them to shape they will have exposed edges.

Kronenberg's cans are still made from steel, but most are aluminium - take a little magnet to the supermarket with you when on the hunt.

  • Fridge door.

  • just bought some easton ea 30s and they fit fine without a shim which is gooood,

cheers for all your help! just need to get a brake leaver now.

    dave

  • just one more question not about bars, any suggestions for some decent cheapish pedals with toe clips?

    thanks

  • MKS Sylvans or GR9s (I prefer the GR9, but it's a personal thing)
    MKS toeclips
Laminated leather straps or nylon straps.

  • Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. I recently got my hands on a silver thomson stem. However, I can't seem to find any silver handlebars with a 31.8mm diameter. Plenty of blacks and whites but no silvers or greys apart from the Deda Newtons. Also, with the Deda handlebars, I've noticed that they are 31.7mm so would they work with my stem or do I need the Deda 31.7mm stem specifically?

    Basically any other choices?

  • a 31.7 bar should work with the 31.8 stem

a simple google search would have confirmed this for you

  • Just by way of useless info, I think it's because deda round their bar measurements down from 31.75mm where as most manufactures round up.

The only thing i don't get is why everyone does not make them 31.8? Id guess im actually misunderstanding what I read and it's probably just them allow for 0.05mm of error.
