you might be able to use a low stack Tange headset.
They're pretty low stack (i had a similar issue+ wasn't going to not use the frame's original forks)
In fact this one here will fit your bike perfectly: linkits not the same as the one i have but the cheaper model (and much, much less than new forks/ headset combos)

the tange headset is what I have on at the moment - but couldn't quite get the keyed washer on as well as the lock nut and thus it kept coming loose and now the threads on the locknut are buggered. i quite fancy some forks with braze ons for a front rack so was thinking about the SJS steel touring fork in either 1" threaded or ahead.

a chris king gripnut will work, i tried loads of different appantly low stack, it uses about 5mm shorter thread than all others. made for short steerers

nope, got mine off a fellow forumer....try the bay??
my threaded headset is fucked - so i really need to buy some new forks as the stupidly low stack height (30mm) is a bitch and i've never been able to find a headset that fits correctly. should i :
a) buy new threaded forks and headset
or
b) get new ahead 1" forks & headset & spacers & stem.
option a) is cheaper (marginally) and I get to keep using my nice nitto quill stem but option b) is better (i think) as threaded headsets piss me off. Are there any nice 1" ahead stems available?
whaddya reckon?
