Restoring a bike

  • I have just bought a Giant Cadex 980c which is about 10 years old. It is in excellent condition, very few scuffs/scratches as it wasn't used very much and was kept in storage.

I am really happy with it, but a few problems have come to light. Firstly, around the boundaries between the carbon fibre and aluminium lugs it seems that the aluminium has corroded slightly causing slight chips (I don't know if there is a resin covering that has chipped or the aluminium itself). Is it possible to repair and protect these areas?

    Thanks

  • dude, you're posting on a singlespeed/fixed gear forum, about the fact that the polish on your aluminium lugs for your (geared) purdy carbon road bike isn't quite to your satisfaction? No disrespect, but when the gods (chris, tynan, rpm, asm etc) find out...

quick, edit the post and ask about polishing a steel tracknut instead...:-)

  • Cover the corrosion with nail polish - the colour isn't important. ;-)
Post some pictures, and do a search on bikeforums.net.

  • less of the deification, frederico.

personally, I have no experience of decade-old carbon/aluminium joints and therefore cannot help the OP at this stage.

    but maybe someone else can..

  • It's never crossed my mind that asm was a deity.
However if Thor returned to earth in the 20th century he may have brought an electrical device instead of a crude, primitive sledgehammer.
    Makes you think ...

  • why aren't i in the list of gods? i'm offended.

  • maybe you're Mercury?

  • Polytheism necessitates some of you gods being lumped together in etc.

  • we'd get more representation in Hinduism..

  • ok. i'll refrain from sending the eagle to peck out his liver on a daily basis.

    FOR NOW.

  • I'm a god?

  • you are a god, and your bicycle is like zeus' yellow thunderbolt.

  • asm as god, what a strange turn of events....

  • That's the picture that went through my mind when I was thinking of Thor

  • i got it, i did, when i read it, i could see you were making a reference to an ongoing theme of the forum, or at least, alex's involvement.

  • I too, understood the reference.

    don't feel under-appreciated , batty.

  • It would have made me feel better if I could have found it before the god-like asm produced it from his personal collection of 'me in my god outfit' photos

  • he's got hundreds. his flickr has sets and sets of them, 'alex as a god on slave bike', 'alex as god at hermit's cave drinking with mere mortals', 'alex as a god waving godly powertools'.

  • PJ, you're the god's god. I kowtow to them, they to you.... etc. Therefore, I'm not even allowed to utter your name :-)

How'd ya know he isn't turning the bike into ss or fixed? User name suggests they could be riding singlespeed. No need to shoot people down.
Not everything on here is strictly fg/ss.
Some people here actually have 'geared' bikes too y'know...

  • In This Forum We Do Not Use The "g" Word!

  • Why Won't It Let Me Shout?

  • maybe only the 'gods' can shout

plus i also love my geared bike

I think you might have to seek expert advice, maybe shoot an email and some pictures to Giant (?)
