so did that not work because
a: .kml isn't set up to expand
b: .kml doesn't contain enough data to expand
c: it's a private not public map (i guess i could test this bit myself) (and maybe i will tomorrow) -

So is that a or b ?
This is just me playing around with no research whatsoever. I'm curious as to the difference between them, .kml is on the recognied attachment list. It just happened that google maps gave me a .kml, I guess you need earth for .kmz and I don't have that, just seeing how far I can get with free publically available assets.
Yes earth is free, but requires an install, so would require me to be at home with my own computer. Plus I think earth for linux runs in some kind of emulation or virtualisation (or was that picassa, haven't researched proper like) and I aren't keen on that. And :) why take up disk space with a novelty app if i can get away doing it all wank2.0.

Basic description .kmz is just a zipped .kml. The zipped file can also contain custom images and maybe other stuff referenced by the .kml. So surely from my original question option b is now ruled out and it is either answer a or c.

i'll loose interest soon enough
answer being a. I manually zipped up the .kml i posted last night and hey presto it worked.

Simply take the kml file that you have... and put it inside a .zip file.
That simple.
Only put a single file in there... and it doesn't matter what the file is named (though matching the name of the .zip file is a good idea).

Either i must be a complete tool or i cant do this... when you say put in zip file you mean convert into zip file? .... no cos you would have said create a zip file.... therefore assumption 1, I can't do it on a mac? (no cos i've seen tynans map) 2, this shits fucked up.
thanks for the tarded help again...
ps i did what you said in the OP.

ok for you macies, macites, macdonians, mactians... create archive (by right clicking) your .kml file... achive it. then change the file extension to .kmz and add to attachments on your post window in advanced... for some reason the map doesnt appear instantly on my browser. I restarted the app. then hey presto the UN was there!
Thanks for the help VB.
probably the completely wrong way of doing it but it works

because I used the search and came up with nothing better...
I need to import a csv file of contacts and post codes into google maps or similar.
has anyone done this before? most of the help I can find online is based around
us zip codes. -

I've used this: http://www.batchgeo.com/ with mostly accurate results, simply names and postcodes, put a few in China for some reason but 99% accurate.

You can do it with uk postcodes too, just as long as the locale is set to the UK. Usually this is automatic if you're on a UK IP address. The Google maps API should give you enough info to to knock up a quick javascript app, or there will be an example that you can customise.

Anyone else find the new Firefox chokes on Google Maps?
I've now enabled the uploading of Google Maps.
You create these using Google Earth or anything that can output a *.kmz file.
Google Earth can be downloaded here:
http://earth.google.com/
Just enter whatever waypoints, routes markers, start icons, end icons... whatever... and when your map is built save it as a *.kmz file and attach it to a post on LFGSS.
That's it.
The example below is incredibly complex, it's the entire Tour de France 2007 route. If that can be mapped, so can the route to Brighton or Southend. Or... in the Bike Polo thread you could add maps showing where the polo grounds are. I'm pretty sure you get the idea.
