Girly bike advice please

  • Evening all, after a miserable performance on the rollers tonight I am home to do a spot of research for my girlfriend. She has booked herself in for a triathlon and now needs to buy something a bit faster than her shopper to compete on. Any of you road bike types got any girl specific recommendations? I guess budget is about
    £800 - £1k.

Any offers of second hand girls bikes fit for a 5ft 6' girl gathering dust and needing a good home also welcome.

    Thanks

  • hippo has an sworks carbon roodie with a small crack going spare ;)

  • Focus gets good reviews. You can only get them through Wiggle though. They have female specific bikes as well.

  • double your budget, and get her a sweetpea. she will love you, and 6 months later when she gets the bike she will love you again.

  • Just sent you a private message with details of a spare frame I have,

Don't know if this is what you have in mind, but it looks like an alright deal:

this looks like another really beautiful frame (and made of steel) and as long as they're not tubs the Zipp rims are also fab, watch out for the twist shifters though, they're horribly inprecise and just a pain to use. But also very easily changed.

  • shes racing, tubes should be fine, and even if you are changing the wheels they should sell for a few shinny pennies

  • Hi Guys

@picco, thanks mate, I think a pure TT bike might be a little much for her. Thanks though.

@Poly WOW, thanks mate. I've forwarded it to Heidi, I'm a bit puoshed for time at the min but will PM you properly later this morning.

  • what triathlon is she doing? The London one? I'm doing that too but I'm gonna do it on my old steel frame fixed. I wonder if this is a bad idea....

  • Blenheim

  • best check whether you can - i know that you cannot do the london duathlon fixed

  • It's spin to win innit. You'll upset people on fancy TT bikes.

is that the one in richmond?

  • I don't think you can do it fixed, as London tri conforms to BTA rules, which state:
[quote**] *****h. There must be a brake on each wheel and both
wheels must be classified as free wheels. ***[quote]
I checked into this last year when preparing for a tri. looking to do one again this year. not sure when though....

  • bugger! really? I was just reading an old thread on here (posted in January - about needing a third person for a triathlon team) and someone on there said he'd done one before and spotted people on all kinds of bike, including fixed.
I guess I'm gonna have to find out. Would be a major pain if I can't ride fixed as I've already comitted to do it for charity, and I don't have another bike!
Or........maybe I can just attach a rear brake? That should sort satisfy the rule makers

Dammit! Didn't notice the bit about the free wheel. Bugger.... : (

  • As Eyebrows correctly says you need both wheels to be freewheels under BTA rules and at London ( and Blenhiem and at all BTA sanctioned races ) they will have marshalls inspecting the bikes at registration and also have BTA referees on the course checking .You can hire road bikes at www.triandrun.com £60 a week
