Interweb Mapping Question [IGNORE]

  • Morning all,

I would like to plan out some rides and also be able to retrace my steps to see how far a given route is. Can anyone recommend a good site to do this? I know you can get google / multimap directions that give distance but this isn't great for bike rides.

Also, anyone thought about investing in a bike specific GPS? I quite like the idea of having a tour guide in front of me to show the way but the ones with proper on screen maps seem quite pricey and you have to buy add on map software depending on where you want to ride. Any experiences?

  • http://www.bikely.com for sharing and planning routes.
google mmaps pedometer is really easy to use also.

  • Sorry, lazyiness prevailed. Posting before searching. Bad. All Info available.

  • Bikely + Garmin Edge FTW.

  • maybe I'm an old-fashioned fella, but me batteries haven't run out yet.

  • I've just recently bought a Mio C230. I originally bought it to drive my van around but i've recently been playing around with it on the bike. Its not bike specific, but has settings for car, bike and pedestrian. It has a map etc and uses the new high precision SIRF Chip.

I'm still learning how to use it and have just figured out how to make it record my journey, which i just did this morning on my commute to work. It's also quite hackable with lost of people opening it up completely. It'll just be a matter of time before you can use open source mapping on it.

    geek fun.

  • Yeah.. map holders are great... really useful... ;)
