Best Match Chain for Phil Track Cog?

Posted on
  • Hiya,

Any chain recommendations for Phil cogs? Currently running a 1/8" Wippermann White Star 152 and the combo makes NOISE!

Zooming in on the cog I can see that the tolerance between the chain sideplates and cog teeth is almost nonexisting, and even though the chainline runs straight I can see and hear the chain having difficulties "settling" on the cog teeth... Especially the chain "quick-release" link makes a distinctive sound on every loop when reaching the cog...

My On-One track crank has the same 1/8" spec but to the naked eye the chainring teeth look narrower than at the rear...

All components are yet to be ridden in - will the noise maybe fade away as the chain/cog wears in or should I try a different chain? I've experimented with different chain tightness and by tweaking rear wheel dish slightly but its no use. As I said the chain line can't be off by more than fractions of a mm.

Any solutions? Thanks and cheers from FINLAND!

  • Give it time. How many miles has this setup done?

  • Unless every part of your drivetrain is designed to work together perfectly out the box as a group you'll need a bit of patience to wait for parts to bed in to each other.

I bling-blinged it with Sugino Zen chainring Phil cog and Izumi Super Toughness chain which took a couple of weeks to STFU

  • Mine still sounds like a tractor... Phil cog + Izumi Super Tough and also tried the chain that HubJub is currently selling.

  • min has been silent since day one phil 1/8th cog, kmc 1/8th chain, and sungino 1/8th chainring

    phil wood is my homeboy

(i want that on a tee shirt)

  • I had a lot of problems with noisy drivetrain on my IRO, in my case I think it was a cog issue... Just chucked an EAI steel cog (to replace a Condor one) onto my Phil and it's completely silent now...
IRO BB + Sugino 75 crankset + HKK Vertex chain + EAI cog + Phil Wood = Silent running

  • the izumi super toughness is also just a rediculously loud chain. my izumi on dura ace c-ring and cog makes loads of noise, i think it has to do with the interior diameter of the rollers. try an hkk or did, they tend to be a bit quieter.

  • is it possible that 3/32 chains are quieter than 1/8 chains because they're finer?

  • Bushed? Bushinged? Bushless? Important things in the quietness and durability (according to some) of a chain.
