• So, I embarked on a light evenings degreasing and tinkering only to discover that the threads on the non-drive side crank arm of my bike are stripped, rendering my crank puller completely useless.

I have resigned myself to the crank being a write off, but despite my clumsiest efforts to prise the arm off and a cautious ride up the nearest hill with the crank bolt unthreaded, it is not budging at all.

Anyone got any words of wisdom or unexpected techniques to impart before I break out the workmate and a hacksaw?

    Cheers

  • you can try to bang it off with a hammer, if the bb spindle and the crank arm are different alloys then heating it might get the crank off, aluminum expands quicker then steel. or take it to BLB they are an expert and destroying cranks (ask asm).

if its a write off, then the grinder could be your quickest option.

  • Hadn't though of heating it...nice one...at least it gives me one more option to explore before getting medieval!

  • keep the flame small, heat jut around the axel and bang on it from behind every so often, try not to burn your paint, and you dont want to get it hot enough to weaken the metal of your bb, just enough to expand the metal of the bb by fractions of a millimeter to get it off.

make sure there are no combustible penetrating oils on the spindle/ crank

  • hold one hammer against botoom of crank arm and a sharp tap of another hammer on top of crank arm ,shockwave normally pops it off

  • I've used a pedal spanner as a lever against the bb casing before - twice! Just lodge it in and lever until you hear a bit of a creek, turn the crank 45 degrees lever again and keep going til it pops off. I've found that a reasonably reliable way of doing it, and even knowingly put on some stripped cranks on a beater bike with the knowledge (hope) that I could eventually get them off again this way.

  • You can get a bike shop to cut a new versized thread in to the crank t pull it off. this will save the crank arm but just means if you ever want ot remove it again you wll have to find an oversized crank puller.... srry for the spelling errors, its late and im drunk. :D
