Installing Sugino 75 Bottom Bracket

Posted on
  • I have just installed a sugino 75 bottom bracket on my new frame, but I am just wondering is it o.k for the adjustable cup on the non-drive side to have a couple of threads exposed from the lock ring?
I had just got the impression that it should be flush with the lock ring!
I have re-installed it about three times to make sure I am doing it right, but keep getting the same outcome.
Even though the threads are exposed everything is spinning o.k and there is no play in there.
Any info would much appreciated, cheers!

  • it's ok. some bb's have a lockring that go on there, some don't.

  • Thanks Dogs. The threads are still exposed even after putting the lockring on there, so they are exposed after the lockring.

  • yeah, still no problems. i would be suprised if it didn't. be very careful that you don't do it up too tight and push the bearings into the cups and trash the BB.

  • Sounds like you have a 68mm BB shell and not a 73mm BB shell . . . or the shell has been 'faced' once or twice by an over zealous mechanic.

. . . nothing to worry about if it is only two or three threads, once you have plenty of threads in the shell + it all turns nicely + there is no play then it shouldn't be a problem.

Here is a great thread over on BikeForums about Sug75BB installation - you probably don't need it now, but the bloke who did it did lots of nice photos so it is a great guide ! :)

That would have been useful a couple of weeks ago. Still, mine seemed to go in ok though I haven't ridden it yet. I have about one thread of the adjustable cup visible outside the lockring, and it's a Fort track track frame - no reason to think that everything isn't as it should be.

Cheers Wheels. It is defiantly a 68mm shell, I just measured it, also the frame is brand new so no facing.
Can you get 73mm sugino bb, because when I measure from the two faces of the bb it comes to 73mm!
I am still bit confused, but if you think it is o.k then that is fine.

Should be fine, the extra length (the two or three threads extending beyond the lock ring) is on the adjustable side, meaning your chainline won't be effected.

As far as I know the Sugino 75 only comes in a 109mm spindle length.

    Ace link that, thanks
The new frame I just bought is coming with a Sugino 75 bb but not sure of the condition so may need to replace it with my brand new Sugino bb off my other bike.

  • Doubt that there is a Sugino 75 BB made for a 73mm BB shell as there aren't many mountain bikers who want loose ball, unsealed BBS!

i'd never ever ever use grease on BB taper. thats how the bite on!!!!

  • dogsballs i'd never ever ever use grease on BB taper. thats how the bite on!!!!

A bit of a contentious subject with good arguments for both sides, but after a lot of research and a lot of reading over the years I now always grease the taper on ISO and JIS square tapers, and then crank it down with a well calibrated torque wrench (I do this once only, none of this tightening and then retightening after a hard ride carry on) - the result has been not one single problem with getting the cranks arms on/off and I have never had an arm loosen or the square receiving hole deform over the last ten years or so.

. . . but I don't doubt there are people who don't grease the taper flats and don't use a torque wrench and have also had no problems.

  • I've just tried to fit this BB. Very, very tight, and seems to jam about half way in, on each side. Cinelli frame.

  • You're doing it wrong.

  • Lock ring on drive side, cap on the other. Not sure what else there is to do. I've fitted other BB on other frames, without problem.

  • Did you apply the magic paste?

  • Maybe you need to chase the threads.

  • I hope for your frame's sake you've installed it straight and not cross threaded.

You might just have some shit on the deeper threads or find it's not threaded that far in. Look at it, measure it. Be the bottom bracket. Look eye Daniel san!

  • I'll try again ...
