  • Wheelbuilders amongst us:

I'm building another pair of wheels for my shiny cannondale, and was reading up on half-radial rear wheels. Sheldon(rip) said they have benefits, but I wonder if the extra (opposing) stresses of riding fixed and skidding loads etc would counteract any benefits.

Does anyone have experience of riding a half-radial wheel, fixed? If so, did it last?

Obviously i wouldn't be flip-floppin' the wheel... it would be 3x on the drive side, and radial on non-drive.

    Like so:

  • i was tempted to do that with my rear phil, but went for a double crowsfoot ie two radial spokes in middle crossed with one spoke either side. wouldn't see it as a problem

  • The advantages of radial one side x cross the other is for dished wheels. Go for a hybrid pattern like crows foot

  • yeah, i was looking at crowsfoot too, is that holding up well? lost any tension over time?

  • my rear, can't see very well though :(

  • Single sided hubs are dished though, might be worth it if that's the case?

  • they are the best wheels i've ridden. :D

  • Skullhead Single sided hubs are dished though, might be worth it if that's the case?

yeah had to dish mine a bit to centralise rim.

  • haha you would say that.

skullhead: Yeah, my hub isn't fixed only, it's fixed/free, so it's not dished, i got it cheap, 125Gn for a pair of phils. I'll never use the free side tho...

  • yeah, but the strentgh issue only comes in with dished wheels because of the offset spoke tension. go with a crossed pattern, whatever it may be, will be much better.

  • 1x looks lovely, dogsballs laced one its sweeet

  • seen toooooo many pics of your rear for my liking so far dogs.
    the wheel looks nice though.

  • dogs: is your rear like this?

  • i wouldn't build up phils with 3 lead 3 trail. it gets really tricky to get the spokes straight coz there is so many crossings. plus you'd have to have some radials in between and swap on the other side. maybe do a crows foot as tommy has posted, but with another radial to the side.

  • no thats what i suggest!! mine has two radial in the middle.

  • or you can do 2-lead to 2 trail

    or

    2-lead 2 trail with twist

  • could you get some better pics of yours tonight? please...

  • can't tonight :(

here's another one 3 lead, 1 trail (should've swapped on the other side though)

  • Dogd, what spoke length do you use for the raidal?

  • Object Dogd, what spoke length do you use for the raidal?

    learn to spell. CUNT

  • large flange to deep v 260mm for radial, 280mm for 3-x (yes slightly short, but prefer it that way)

  • Are the 280s better for getting more tension? I generally use 282s
Cheers for the info on the radial.

  • sort of, just don't like screwing the spoke down over the area with no threads.

  • depends if its over under over or under under over ;)
