ASM: "shut up dale!"

Forget it. Even if you get the BB bolt out you need a special crank extractor with a weird size....(that is unless you have one offcourse).

Hey Turd, can't work out what is going on in the photo, I have a socket set if that is a help, I also have a crank extractor but is that what you need?

ok im on the phone but ill give u a shout once i speak to alex
-
• #10
Yes - you need a 15mm socket to get the bolt out and then a crank extractor to get the crank off the axle - pretty common - sorry though - I do not have one. There is no smart way to get the crank off otherwise without damaging it or the frame.
-
• #11
Take the bolt out and remove it completely before using the extractor :-)
-
• #12
is that a 5 bolt TA crank in the picture?
if so i have an extractor in E1 (whitechapel).
Any help? -
• #13
cheers for all your help. alex went to someones house to look for the tool but was no use and now won't pic up his phone ill get back to those who have offered when i get through to him. cheers

Which tool to buy depends on what brand and model of crankset you have. Although all types use the same one- thread-per-millimeter pitch, three common diameters for the dustcap threads: Campagnolo, 22 mm; T.A. 23 mm; and Stronglight, 23.15 mm. All other brands that I know of use the same size as Campagnolo. There is one small exception: early Lambert cranksets were threaded 7/8-inch by 24 threads per inch.) -

yeah. I get ya but alex is a man on a mission. hes got the cranks off im waiting to see what the bb situation is.
-
• #18
Er no i didn't, due to having a 22 mil crank extractor.
Damn bikes, I'm not speaking to this one for at least a week.
How hard is it to get ahold of a stronglight crank extractor? I want to get this bugger sorted by today at the minimum of expense.
Thanks for all your help guys, I'm not very good with cranks y'see :(

Q: why does he want to take the cranks of the claud butler??
-

If the extractor I chucked you didn't fit wander up to London Fields Cycles, Greg will be able to sort it in seconds.

good luck getting hold of the right crank extractor today.
I think the TA one that Fruitbat has should do the job. I have one at home, but that's in Kingston and I'm in Farringdon right now. And I wouldn't let it out of my sight either, as at least two of the bikes at home have TA cranks on them. You could try wrapping your extractor in plumbers tape, but it's a little risky.

Dale - first of all it's a 52t chainring which is a little large. Second of all they're 170 cranks and i'm getting pedal strike. Third of all it has far, far too many rounded out bolts for my liking, and fourth all of said bolts are loose. All of this plus riding brakeless = death. Also i have a set of 165 messengers with a BB that will fit.
Also it's a geoffrey butler if you believe the headbadge and stickers. ;)
Thanks for the socket wrench & crank extractor ben - massive help. Yeah it was still too small. I think i'll walk the bike to london fields tomorrow - I have everything off, just need the right crank extractor (and a new headset, god damnit.)
Fruitbat, i'd rather get them off with the right size tool, I want to avoid damaging them any more than I possibly already have! (they are definitely stronglight cranks) but if London fields can't do it i may give you a call later on today (wednesday)
Edit, oh yeah I fixafied it, so shoot me. I couldn't resist!!
Cheers me dears :)

tragic, isn't it? i'm heartbroken.
he swears he's going to put it back together with the original bits later, once he's given all of them a "good clean".
Dear all,
ASM's stuck at my house until he can swap his cranks over!
