I've been telling drivers off when I see them using their phones. They're usually easy to spot.. weaving over the place, driving at an odd speed, pulling out into you..
Good to hear a proper sentence was actually handed down, instead of just a fsckign driving ban and fine. -

I hope the 5 year driving ban starts when she's finished the 4 year jail sentance. Seems a bit pointless banning someone who's locked up.

Good.
I notice that the BBC report in the above link is doing it's best to stir it up a bit - red-light jumping, non-helmet wearing cyclist gets killed. I suppose it's thought provoking if anything. -

It's tragic that someone was killed, and don't get me wrong, but the amount of cyclists I see on y way home who are texting as they pedal is shocking.
Sour chips either way

Richard Cheese Good.

It still says that even if the cyclist did jump the lights, and isn't taking safety precautions... if you fuck around on your phone and hit the cyclist then the blame if yours and you'll go to jail.
I like that.

5 Years for death by dangerous driving. Murder is pre-meditated, and she didn't climb into the car with the intent to kill.

A lot less likely to kill someone doing it on a bike though.

Does hitting a pedestrian texting on his phone and then walking blindly out into the road count? It bloody hurt too :(

It kind of reflects the fact that both of them broke the law, but one of them has already paid a fairly hefty price...
I actually think the bbc underplayed this aspect of it. I would expect the moral driving majority to rise up in protest!

this is a messy one, as the dude did RLJ.

You hit a pedestrian? Then texted on his phone? Then walked blindly out into the road?
That's just asking to get hurt ;)

dogsballs this is a messy one, as the dude did RLJ.
and the prosecution conceded that and brought in it as part of their case from what I've read... [which is why she only got four (or five) years in jail plus the ban, which is a lot less than she *could *have got.] She got 'punished' and so did the cyclist...

I can imagine the scene. Normal, law abiding woman gets into her grey box, same as a thousand previous mornings.
Comfy seat. Climate controlled. Pleasant music. She glides around the streets totally disconnected from the outside world, totally unappreciative of the murderous potential of her two-ton vehicle. Never an accident, never an insurance claim.
Til she takes her attention from the road (as she’s probably done a thousand times before without any consequence) and ends up with a person’s death on her hands and plenty of time in prison to mull it over. A part of me feels sorry for her.
Every driver should have the experience at least once of smashing into a wall/other car/whatever. Burst their comfy cocoon and really understand its weight and momentum. I’ve been a better driver ever since it happened to me.

mongrel She glides around the streets....
Not quite. The woman in question was doing 45mph in 30mph zone.
Speed kills. So does texting on your phone. She deserved everything she got.
