What's a Clincher Rim?

Posted on
  • Hi all. Another stupid question from me I'm afraid, but what are clincher rims? Is that just a name for normal mavic open-pro type rims? Are all rims that take normal inner-tubes and tyres called 'clinchers' ? I'm just looking for all some black rims, and - thanks to guys on here - got pointed to various places that sell 'clinchers'. I just don't want to spend my hard-earned on something that either isn't for road use/commuting or won't fit my hubs (36 hole camp records).

Thanks for your knowledge as always.

  • Clinchers is the generic term for your common or garden tyre, i.e. with an inner tube. The other type is tubular which are glued to the rim and have the inner tube sewn into the tyre.

So Mavic Open Pros are 'clincher' rims. Another option for black rims is the Ambrosio Excellence - they are a bit heavier than Open Pros but are very robust. And look nicer too.

  • Thanks a lot mate, and thanks for the Ambrosio tip. I want all-black rims though, without polishes sides. Do you think these:

would be too fragile? What about these mavc ceramic rims? Any good?

  • Those box section Campag rims will be bombproof - they're the kind of thing pro cyclists use still for the cobbled races in Belgium and France in the spring. Very nice.

Mavic ceramic rims are expensive but solid too. Are they black though - I always thought ceramic rims were a grey/brown colour.

  • i like that term, common or garden tyre, that is all.

  • The mavics are as black as a black thing.

  • Clincher rim is just another term for pelvic floor exercises.

  • I'll be the one to point to the obvious (and maligned by some) unmachined Deep V in black - stiff, clincher, come in a 36 hole too, £35 a rim. Someone will undoubtedly say that these are a cop out/fashion choice, but also plenty of people rate them highly for commuting and general riding.

Available at Brick Lane Bikes and a bunch of online retailers too, as well as a ton of them on ebay.
