if you're based up muswell hill way i can recommend a really good accountant. My fiancee's a freelance graphic designer and has just set herself up as a ltd company - a bit of arsing around but well worth it now with all the tax deductibles etc etc... much better than going under an umbrella company

I'm freelance self-employed, which isn't as complex. I spent months worrying about it, then finally asked for some help from a family member who knows about this stuff and it wasn't too bad. Far simpler than I thought it would be.
Don't pay someone too much to do it.

Thanks for the offer, but i already have a project lined up with MTV for the rest of the year so will be able to use all their stuff. Will keep me busy for a while at least. Will keep it in mind for future projects though. cheers.

the process is fairly quick, you can do most of it online but there are forms that require some signatures. http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/

setting yourself up as a limited company's pretty simple really. It's the annual return, accounts and tax that's a pain...
-

i'm going to do that soon too, my friend is going to recommend me an accountant, if you would like the details i can send it to you later.

Get the name and registration via Companies House, you can do most of it online and it's piss easy to do (you've no idea how much I hate forms and even I found it a doddle). Next step is to get yourself a good accountant for the books and that's pretty much it chap. If it was me I really wouldn't pay someone 100 squid or whatever to register for me with Companies House, waste of money. I ran my own thing for a couple of years in advertising, if you fancy a chat I'm also Camberwell based.

Thanks for the advice so far. had a look into setting up company name online and your right it doesnt seem as intimidating as it first looks. Definatly gonna leave the month to month book handeling to the proffesionals for a bit though. maybe next year take it on myself when im a bit more in tune with what im doing.

My company's set up for a music project, so it's not my main source of income (it's mostly to stop my arse getting sued for uncleared samples), but though the accounts are a pain, it wouldn't really be worth my while paying someone else to do it.
I opened up a business account at Abbey and use my monthly statements to keep track of all my incomings and outgoings. I think a lot of it is working out which parts of the tax return forms you DON'T have to fill in.

any design bods in here interested or know of anyone who could help with two weeks (or so) work designing print and graphics for apparel?
whisper me your details if you're keen along with links to your work/c.v and your daily rate etc. ideal candidates have experience in mens street apparel designing graphics and repeat pattern, but anyone with a varied hand writing and the illustrator skillz may be suitable too. the work is based in N17 starting 7th july. thanks and now you can go back to talking bike. :D -

Good Luck W.
There's gotta be work out there....
Just finding it!Can you organize an exhibit of your prints somewhere?
Then you could offer them for sale in signed limited numbers.
Even cafe's, bars, restaurants etc...
Im going to be setting myself up as a Ltd company in the next month or so to be working in Television Production. Im terrible at stuff like this and am fully prepared to pay someone to set it all up for me. Anyone done this and can recommend a London Based company/ person to do it for me?
Thanks
