rotafix the cog (google or wikipedia it)
lockring can be tightened with hammer and screwdriver
adding two teeth to the cog adds 1 inch to your chain run so would it move you rear axle 1/2 inch forward. It depends how much space is left; you may need to just add a half-link rather than get a new chain.going 16t to 18t will make it 11.1% easier for you to pedal

suicide hub!
(unless it's a fixed/fixed hub i guess)
i've been running one for a couple of weeks and it's held out so far. i've got a front brake as well though. going brakeless on a suicide hub sounds a little risky. -

I met a guy, at the London Calling weekend, who ran a suicide hub, brakeless on flat DX-style pedals.
Haven't seen or heard anything of him since though :] -

the whole suicide hub thing is exagerated. if you check the cog every week or something, and rotafix it on real tight then it will be pretty good, and if not then just ride over to the side of the road when it fails and rotafix it on again, just dont use too much lube when putting it on.

if its fixed/fixed its fine.
Suicide is pretty dodgy.
- Especially down long hills - where you dont' want to go an faster than you already are... well thats what i've found. if the chain gets caught you can find yourself stopping very suddenly.

how does one ascertain whether one's spare hub is suicide or fix-fixed?
-
• #11
whether it has a second threaded section which is reverse threaded specifcally to hold a lockring.
-
• #12
See how there is two distinct 'groups' of thread? The outer one of these is for a lockring and tightens anti-clockwise. "Suicide" hubs are called that for a reason.

Surely the logical option is to remove the current 16t fixed spocket and fit the 18t in it's place!

afternoon all
Am changing my gear from 48x16 to 48x18 (the knees are beginning to complain, and hill starts are NOT the quickest at the moment...)
i have a flip flop hub with one side free so just gonna buy an 18t sprocket and slip it on there.
am i right in thinking...
I will need a chain whip to toighten the sprocket on?
and a lockring which is tightened with just a spanner? (i have an adjustable)
will i need a longer chain?
will the jump from 16 to 18 make much of a difference?
Thanks all...
