  • I finally got around to doing London - Cambridge yesterday, which I have been wanting to do since last summer. It was a beautiful day and a brilliant ride. I was pretty knackered by the time I pulled into Cambridge station, with some pretty significant knee pain that has cleared up with a hot bath and a night's sleep.

I was riding 48 x 19 which comes out at just short of 19 thousand complete pedal strokes.I feel really chuffed to have done it and wanted to share with you guys :-)

Here's the maps of my route (it adds up to 97.5km, but I reckon that taking curves on the road, as opposed to the straightlines on the map will add up to that elusive 2.5k. And I had to ride home from the station..) Map1, Map2 when the pedometer app ran out of new points to add!

What now worries me is that the Dunwich is twice as far. Oh shit.

  • good work mashton, and i take it noone got killed ;)

  • oh, and there are no hills on the way to dunwich so it's much easier. yea haa

  • No hills to Cambridge either. :-)

Actually the drag into Epping sucked and there was one by Wendon's Ambo that was a bit of a surprise. But no bother to the power of the fixed wheel. Maybe.

  • Good work mashton!

  • Its glorious when you discover that you can actually ride, sssssshhhhhh don't tell anyone, OUTSIDE of the city...!!! good lad

  • you got to ride on days of light gravity matt. that's the key.

  • jonny you got to ride on days of light gravity matt. that's the key.

When do you predict the next one? I'll put it in my diary.

  • Actually, that's a good point. Since the Eart is not spherical, it bulges at the equator, then hill climbing should be easier the further North you go (in the Northern hemisphere.)

    Tour of Iceland, anyone?

it is this sunday. and time to go and play in the surrey hills.

going by mashton's last comment it should be easier for you anyway, your'e up north somewhere aintcha.

  • One small aside, mashton.

Any reason you can't quote the distance in miles?

Even if it's just for the Old Folk....

  • Because 100K sounds longer?

  • It's 62.14 miles

  • Good work.. I fancy giving this a go one weekend actually..

How long did it take you?

I seem to have trouble getting up kerbs never mind hills.

  • Thinking of doing the Liverpool-Chester-Liverpool ride fixed this year. That's not far off 60miles.

    you cruel, cruel man... ;)

  • I was hoping that people wouldn't ask the time. ;-)

In total it was 6 hours from home to Cambridge station, with a 45 minute lunch break and about 45 minutes of other stops for directions, waiting for friends (who joined me at Bishop's Stortford) to catch up, that kind of thing.

@ Kowalski, yup it was 62 miles.

Quite a dismal average speed, really.

  • Hi mashton. Is this an organized weekly ride then.
If so do you have any further details please

    Cheers

  • Hi mikec,

Not organized in any sense, I've been meaning to do it for ages. When a mate from Cambridge rang on sunday morning, asking if I wanted to meet at Bishop's Stortford train station and then ride to Cambridge, I said "Yes, but I'll ride to Stortford from home in London first."

I think that a lot of people on here would fancy the ride, so get organising :-) Although, last summer hippy and I tried to do exactly that and got a whole host of no shows...

  • Ooh, it's too far.. ooh, I'm hungover.. ooh my Mummy says I can't play with strangers.. ooh my track frame hurts me after 5mi.. boo hoo..

I've still not ridden to Cambridge mashton.. maybe we could try again?

I did 100 in 6 hours as well.. 100mi ;) Geared, but I can barely walk today.. fkn Spesh seatpost.

  • 6 hours isn't too bad considering stopping, faffing and breaks etc.

Would be up for doing this actually, especially as it's flat!

  • @ hippy, yes I am definitely up for doing it again, but am pretty busy for the next few weekends. Maybe we'll do it in the spring proper? Notwithstanding the pain. I may have to think about changing my pedals to ones with more float, I have quite a turn out on my ankles and think that might be causing the knee issues.

I do quite fancy dong it geared and seeing what the difference is like. But that will have to wait until this year's cycle to work scheme kicks in:-)

  • @lucky, if we sort something out then you're on. It'll be good to have a group. And thanks for the confidence boost, re: 6 hours :-)

  • 10 mph, geez i can could run that speed :p
